Life got busy and this interest took a backseat for a while. But my sister and I picked it up again recently. Here are some of the notes compiled recently on 'our Morrissey's': 1880 - US Federal Census - Bridgit Morrisey (40/1840) married to James Morrisey (45/1835). Her occupation listed as house keeper and his as farm laborer. No street address is listed on the census sheet anywhere. No date of emigration is listed on census form though James' place of birth is recorded as Ireland, same as his parents though they are not named. Bridgit also from Ireland. Children listed: Julia A., 19 a dressmaker; Edward 17 a student; Cassie T. 14 (Catherine?)and a student. James 9 and a student; Annie 6 and a student; Thomas J.3; Mary, 10mo. at home. The only indication of location is Milton/Norfolk County/MA. 1900 - US Federal Census(12th) - James Morrissey (dob 07/1828) is 71 and married to Bridget (dob 09/1841) who is 58. James has been here (Ireland) for 56 years (1844)and is naturalized. Bridget has been here (Ireland) 55 years(1845) They have been married 39 years ( ~1861) and have 8 surviving children out of 8.(Later documents suggest 10) Address is Russell St.,fully owned. Also on the census: Julia A., 38(04/1862)dressmaker; Edward L.. 36(04/1864); Annie J., 25 (12/1874) dressmaker; Thomas J., is 23(03/1877)dentist; Mary E.,20( 08/1879) a teacher; Alice V., 15(09/1884) is in school. I have other notations, but I suspect there might be enough here to be of some help. I have not yet found which port of entry; where they were married or death/burial info. Will keep looking and of course I'm grateful for any new info folks may have Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: FMosconi Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.morrissey/566.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In case this would be of interest, Lucile: from http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/pwwmh/ma43.htm Fay Cottage, Lancaster Industrial School Lancaster Industrial School Chapel and Dining Hall Photographs courtesy of Kelly Ryan, superintendent, M.C.T. Lancaster. 43 One of America's oldest girls training schools, the Lancaster Industrial School for Girls was established in 1854 as one of the most progressive correctional institutions for women of its day. Throughout the 19th century, state governments struggled with how to best deal with youthful law-breakers and vagrants. Some states began to provide correctional facilities, often known as "Industrial Schools," while other states continued to incarcerate "delinquents." For example, in 1854, the same year that Massachusetts appropriated $20,000 for the Lancaster Industrial School for Girls to "correct" improper behavior, the Wisconsin judicial system sentenced a 9 year-old boy to a maximum security state prison. Institutions like the Lancaster Industrial School led the way in social reform, copying a cottage system created in France that emphasized a wholesome, family-like atmosphere and the opportunity to rise above the "low life" slums from which Victorians assumed delinquent children! came from. Providing individual rooms for each girl rather than in crowded dormitories, the architecture of the Lancaster Industrial School was as progressive as its goals. The girls were housed in eight, three-floor cottages. A parlor, sewing and dining room, kitchen, laundry, and schoolroom were on the first floor. The housemother, a teacher, and the girls lived on the second floor, with each room providing the relative luxuriousness of a single bed, chair, bureau, and corner closet. Special teachers lived in apartments on the third floor. As schools like the Lancaster Industrial School proved that reform efforts worked far better than prison time, other states began to establish schools for troubled adolescents (Wisconsin had one by 1859). By the late 19th century, "Industrial Schools" with an emphasis on reform had become commonplace, a method that many states continue to implement today. The Lancaster Industrial School for Girls is located southeast of Lancaster, MA. The facility is currently being utilized as a co-ed, minimum/pre-release security prison, and is not open to the public. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Peter is the g.g grandson of Thomas Morrissey from Ballymakea. We are travelling to Ireland again later this year and staying for a week in the area to look at places where they lived and find out more. We have a great interest in this wonderful family, who married into the Ryan family via Thomas'daughter Mary. They were all early pioneers of the Clarence Valley and we are very proud of them. We are farmers ourselves and have an interest in heavy horses and carriage driving, imagine our delight to find the Morrisseys built carriages! We would love to get in touch with you again.
