    3. For those of you who may be interested... Daily American Republic, 20 JUL 2005: The final chapter in the life of former Doniphan resident, well-known author and historian, Jerry Wayne Ponder, closed when he gently passed away in his sleep Saturday, July 16, 2005, near Guffey, Colo. of an apparent heart attack. He and his wife, Janice, were vacationing there with longtime friends, John and Carolyn Melson of Fairdealing. Jerry was born Aug. 8, 1937, to Leonard F. and Hazel Keel Ponder. As a child, he developed a keen interest in the history of Ripley County as he listened to stories his parents told on Sunday drives, and as he accompanied his father when he hauled sand, gravel, and water to residents throughout the county. This vast knowledge, coupled with years of research, led him to author more than 20 historical books. He was educated in the Doniphan schools and attended the University of Missouri-Rolla and the University of New York-Albany. On Nov. 10, 1962, he married Janice Albright in Phoenix, Ariz. He worked for the Missouri State Highway Department as a surveyor before entering the Army where he worked in the field of Military Intelligence and served in Vietnam. He continued to work in this field until a heart attack forced his retirement. The couple and their only child, Victor, returned to Ripley County where they made their home near Fairdealing. The family soon became an integral part of the community with Jerry taking an active role in the Ripley County Chamber of Commerce, the Ripley County Historical Society, and Ozarks Heritage Tourism Association. Janice was always supportive of his endeavors and shared his enthusiasm. The couple's interests included attending Civil War re-enactments, and Jerry felt that Ripley County's historical significance in the war was worthy of recognition. The Chamber of Commerce agreed, and, in 1992 staged a monumental and exciting reproduction of General Sterling Price's invasion of Missouri. Mr. Ponder served on the board of the Doniphan Neighborhood Assistance Program which, with much community involvement, led to the creation of Current River Heritage Park, the Current River Heritage Museum, the Pioneer Heritage Homestead, and the relocation of the log cabin to Doniphan. Ponder served as curator of the Current River Heritage Museum and Janice volunteered in the museum gift shop. Janice was the owner and manager of Ponder Books, a company responsible for publishing more than 20 of his historical books. His literary accomplishments earned him respect from the Southern Writer's Association as Writer of the Year. He was also commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, an honor he shared with the late former President Harry S. Truman. The Ponders were also active members of the Amity Cemetery Board. Mr. Ponder was a Mason and a member of the National Rifle Association. In 1994 the couple moved to Mason, Texas. The historical town and region provided new material for more historical works. Fort Mason and its part in the Civil War was the subject of one of these volumes. He was serving on the Texas Historical Commission and was a member of the Mason County Historical Society. The Ponders were partners in the purchase and renovation of several Victorian-style homes in Mason, and Janice is an interior decorator and antique dealer. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are their son, Victor, and daughter-in-law, Rebecca, of El Paso, Texas; a grandson, David, and two granddaughters, Erica and Lizette; one sister, Ramona Brown, Doniphan; one brother, Larry Ponder, Doniphan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Nancy Elaine Halcomb; and a brother, Paul. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Amity Cemetery, Dorothy Looney, secretary/treasurer; Route 1, Box 4285, Doniphan, Missouri 63935. Visitation will be Friday, July 22 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home. There will be a graveside service 1 p.m. at the Amity Cemetery in Doniphan. -- "At the birth of the Sun, and his brother the Moon, their Mother died. So the Sun gave to the earth her body from which was to spring all life, And he drew forth from her breast the stars and he threw them into the night sky to remind him of her soul." My mother's sister; Audie Mae Smith was married to a Charles Russell "Russ" Orvis...............and one of Uncle Russ' sisters married into the Ponder family. I believe that they migrated into Lawrence Co., Arkansas? Anyone ever research the Orvis family? Would love to know more about the Ponders, also.
