    1. [MORIPLEY] Daniel Paine of Maury new info
    2. For those many Ripley Co. people descended from Daniel and Nancy Paine of Maury Co., Tennesse - I have some new information. I just received a long awaited for file from the NARA regarding my inquiry for the War of 1812 Bounty Land Warrant received by Daniel's widow Nancy. I found reference to this application last Sept. and immediately sent to the Nat. Archives for it. Source: NARA Bounty Land Warrant file #29270 and #14335 There are 2 wonderful letters - I've abbreviated for briefness State of TN, Court of Maury On this 4 Feb 1851, personally appeared before me a J.P for County & state aforesaid, Nancy Pain, aged 78 years, a resident of Maury Co. in state of TN, who being duly sworn declares she is the widow of Daniel Pain who was a private in the company commanded by Captain James McMahan in the Regiment of TN Volunteers commanded by Colonel Lauderdale in Gen'l Coffee's Brigade in the War with Great Britain declared by the US on the 18 Jun 1812. That her said husband volunteered in Maury Co., TN on or about the 3rd day of October 1814 for the term of 6 months and was honorabley discharged at Columbia, TN on or about the 24th day of April 1815 as will appear by ref to the Master roll of said company, she not knowing what he done with his certificate of discharge. She further states that she was married to the said Daniel Pain in the state of North Carolina in Burke Co. on the 24th day of December 1798 by one Elidge, a Minister of the Gospel and her name before marriage was Nancy Pain and that she and her husband were cousins, that her said husband died in Maury Co. in the state of TN on the 6th day of Dec 1839 and she is still his widow. She further states there is no public or private record of her marriage. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which she may be entitled under the act passed Sept 28th, 1850. (signed by her in very wobbly handwriting) Nancy Panye Apparently she did receive 80 acres of land somewhere - not in Maury Co. that I've found - but she again applied in 1855 when another act was passed for veterans and widows of the War of 1812, saying she had sold the first parcel she received. The second letter is much like the first. It's dated 31 Mar 1855 and she says she's 82, however she changed the date of Daniel's death to 10 Dec 1841. Anyway - this is the first time there are any clear dates at all for Daniel Paine Sr. and Nancy. She was still living in 1860 in Maury Co. in the household of her grandson, Eli Beasely. Eli wrote his own will in 1862 which wording suggests there was still more to come due from his mother's "dower". I would take that to indicate that Nancy Pain was still living and her own estate which came from her husband . . still intact. I think she outlived them all!! I have never found a will in Maury Co. records for Nancy. The bounty land she recieved was not in Maury Co. I will have to make another request for that through the Federal Land Commission Office. <sigh> If anyone would like full copies of the above mentioned 2 letters for their own files, I'd be happy to send them.
