Sorry, Mississippi County, MO
Debbie, The 1880 census listed Mariah Duvall as a widow born in Arkansas, father was born in England and her mother in Arkansas. Marie
Matt, I really am sorry you couldn't find anything...but not surprised! I would love to have info on Rouse. I don't know who Mariah's parents were other than the census report that stated that Mariah was born in Arkansas, her father was born in England and her mother in Arkansas. I appreciate the quick response....... Thanks, Marie
Matt, Thank you very much!! Debbie -----Original Message----- From: MORIPLEY-L-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:MORIPLEY-L-request@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Matt Patterson Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 10:46 AM To: MORIPLEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MORIPLEY] Reminicent History of the Ozark Region Debbie, Did you need info on any of those folks? Here's the info the document has on Ripley and Oregon Counties. I just scanned this in quickly with my OCR software without editing so there are probably typos. Oregon County was organized in 1845. Eleven Points River, which rushes from the base of a high hill, with its feeders Spring, Hurricane, White, Dry, Pine, Frederick and Warm Fork Creeks, and Barren Creek, are the great drainers o this division of the State. Pine and hardwood forests, and the best lead and iron ores are found almost everywhere within its boundaries. Alton, the seat of justice, is a small, semi-southern village. Oregon County was credited with 10,467 inhabitants in 1890, against 5,791 in 1880. The population is divided as follows: Cedar Bluff Township, 495; Falling Springs, iSo; Highland, 450; Job, ' Johnson, 494; King, 412; Lynn (including the 1,143 in Thayer Village), 3,184; Moore, 740; Oak Grove, 1,798; Piney, 1,064, and Woodside, 735. The postal villages are Alton, Attie, Bandyville, Billmore, Brawley, Couch, Garfield, Greer, Griswold, Jeff, Job, Many Springs, Mitch, Myrtle, Thayer, Thomasville, Wilderness and Woodside. The physical characteristics of the county do not vary much from those of Howell on the west and Ripley on the east; grain crops with cotton and tobacco find a soil and climate adapted to them and bring rich rewards to the planters. Ripley County, organized Janu'ry 5, 1833, is tiie hme of the Eleven Point, Current and Little Black Rivers. In 1837 there were two mills oh Current River among the yellow pine forests and flat woods. One merchant established himself at Van Buren, the county seat. Beaufort was established just prior to 1837 on the Big Black, in the midst of the "Maxwell Grant." It was then understood that valuable mineral deposits-lead, silver, copper and iron-existed here, but the period of development was postponed. In Beck's Gazetteerof 1823, there is no mention made of the county ortown. During the war wholesale murder was the rule. Doniphan, the county seat, was burned and pillaged, and women and children suffered like the combatants. The population of Ripley in 1890 was 8,512 against 5,722 in i88o. There were 310 inhabitants in Briar Creek Township; 405 in Current River; 1,557 in Doniphan (including 6og in Doniphan Village); 293 in Fourchee; 1,074 in Galewood; 588 in Harris; 326 in Johnson; 449 in Jordan; 796 in Kelley; 322 in Thomas; 1,027 in Union; 353 inVarner and 1,012 in Washington. The postal villages of the county are Bennett, Briar Creek, Doniphan, Dryden, Dry Springs, Fair Dealing, Fernnook, Gamburg, Gatewood, Naylor, Pine, Pleasant Grove, Ponder, Poynor, Tucker and Varner. Like the counties of the southern tier, this is within the cotton belt, but the farmers give more attention to wheat, corn, oats and rye than to cotton or tobacco. - Matt ----- Original Message ----- From: "Horine, Debbie L" <DHorine@sprg.mercy.net> To: <MORIPLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 9:33 AM Subject: RE: [MORIPLEY] Reminicent History of the Ozark Region > Matt, > > Thank you so much for your time! Hello, If you have time to look up a family for me I would appreciate it. In 1850, John B. Duvall, his wife, Caroline were living in Mississippi County with two children, L.A. and Mary. I have not been able to find out who his parents were or where they came from. L.A. (Lewis) married Mariah Rouse and one of their children, Sarah married Ben Kitterman and they lived in Ripley County. Thanks, Marie Puttkamer
July 2, 1886 Pine Items Abe Bumgardner, W. J. Whitwell, Geo. Hilton, H. G. Gue, D. M. Marlin, Dr. White, J. R. Drane, J. W. Welch and E. S. Rigsbee are going to build cisterns right away. Water being a scarce article here is one of the drawbacks to our section of country, though there are several good wells and some ponds for stock water. From the prospects there will soon be plenty of water as it is one of the necessaries of life we can't do well without, consequently the ground will soon be punctured with holes for the purpose above mentioned. W. H. Stone, while on his way to Bow's mill last Saturday, found a bee tree. The picnic at Park City will be on the 7th of July. Everybody is invited to attend, and a special invitation is given to the candidates for the various offices - from the fact that the dinner will be free. While Samuel White and William Johnston were fishing in Eleven Points one night last week their boat run under a small log and sunk. The boys had killed several fine fish. They lost them and their gigs, but saved themselves. White "cooned" out on the log while Johnston held on to the log for dear life. After White got out he went to get Johnston out and found the water only three feet deep. Billy concluded he could make it out by himself. Jos. Berry and Jos. Shackleford attended the great revival at Doniphan a few days last week. Peter Camp has bought a new mowing machine. It is the first one ever introduced in the Irish Wilderness. So much for progress. Mr. Peter Woodring says he has as good prospect for a corn crop as he has had for years, though his beans that he planted in his corn are a failure from the fact that the corn grew so fast that the vines were all pulled up. H. C. Stone's wife is getting well. She is able to walk around a little. The prospect for a good corn crop is good. We had a good rain Saturday and some rain during the night. News is scarce in this section of country. The people are healthy and busy, and as a general thing attend to their own business, consequently we don't have any fussing or fighting. But there is one thing that we do have here and that is some of the prettiest girls that can be found any where in Southeast Missouri. We will not say much about the young men as they are - with the girls, but the bachelors and widowers are all right with them - over the left. Jason
