Matt, Hi - thanks for volunteering:-) Does your book cover Clay Co. AR? I am researching the GORDON family. I would be interested in anything you find for John, Irvin or Pleasant Frederick GORDON. I am also researching John and Benjamin SHERFIELD from Clay Co., AR. Thank you, Elon Brooks
Debbie, Thanks! Both of John's wives were from Ripley Co. If you have a chance to quickly look for them. I've also seen the spelling of Merrill as Merrell. Mahala also spelled Mahalia was born 1 Nov 1854. John married Martha Riley on 11 Mar 1880. I have no idea when she was born. This is where it starts to get real confusing and real interresting at the same time. John's first wife Mahala\Mahalia were distant cousins. Mahala\Mahalia's mother is Sarah S. "Sallie" Patterson. Sallie was a niece of Daniel Pitchford Patterson my GGGGrandfather. In my previous e-mail I said John F. was the brother to Daniel. That's not true, John F.'s father George W. Patterson was a nephew of Daniel Pitchford Patterson. Is everything clear as mud now? I'm not even sure if I understand it completely! Jeannie, I would love to have a copy of the picture of Edna Pierce. I seem to remember an Aunt Edna but could have been from another of my families. Thanks so much, Donna
Matt, Is there anything on Pierce/Pearce or Walker? You are a brave man taking on these requests. There could be hundreds. Thank you ever so much. Donna

Quickly scanned in with my OCR software so there may be some typos or unrecognized characters but I think it's readable for the most part. HON. WILLIAM A. PEARCE. The practical value of shrewdness and discrimination combined with strict probity is exemplified in the prosperous condition of those who transact business on these principles. Mr. Pearce is a man who has kept fully abreast of the times in the matter of enterprise, and is considered one of the most substantial and useful citizens of the town of Doniphan, Mo. He is a native of the Prairie State, born in Vienna in 1861, and is the son of I. N. Pearce, formerly a prominent merchant of Vienna, The father came to Missouri in 1878, settled in Butler County, and has held the office of probate judge almost ever since going there. He is now about seventy-nine years of age. William A. Pearce grew up in Vienna, Ill., received his education in the public schools, and then branched out as a printer, working on the Old Yeoman. He left there in 1878 and came to this county, where he became a printer for the Prospect Mr. Pearce was but seventeen years of age when he came here and he had but 35 cents to his name. He worked for Pinckney Mabrey, was in his office two years, and then went with T. W. Mabrey, who established the Prospect and the News and consolidated them as the Prospect News. In 1887 Mr. Pearce sold his interest and formed a partnership with T. M. Thannisch and opened a general store. Two years later he engaged in business with R. E. Lee under the firm name of Pearce & Lee, and they have since built up an extensive trade. They are both live, enterprising business men and well deserve the success that has attended their efforts. In i886 Mr. Pearce was elected to represent the county in the Legislature and was chairman of the Committee on Printing and Library and a member of the Committee on Accounts. In 1892 he was elected county treasurer and in 1894 will be reelected. He is keenly alive to his responsibilities, fulfills them in the most prompt and thorough manner, and even his political enemies have come to understand that he is" the right man for the right place." Politically he has always been in strong sympathy with the Democratic Party. In the year 1884 he was married to Miss Kate S. Holbrook, a native of Hartford, Conn., and two Sons and a daughter have been born to this union. He is a member of the K. of P. and the A. 0. U. W. Mr. Pearce by his energy, industry and honorable dealing has been unusually successful. He has many friends and the respect generally of the best class of Ripley County citizens. - - - - Matt ----- Original Message ----- From: <Donnamomburg@aol.com> To: <MORIPLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 3:49 PM Subject: [MORIPLEY] William A. I have never in my history on this list, admonished anyone. Today is the day. You guys are the best group anyone could ever want to work with. The volunteers make it great and a lot easier on me. Not to mention that we would not have the online resources that we do if it wasn't for their help. And not just the volunteers but any of you who step up the plate and answer questions posted by others. You dont know how much it means to me. I feel that we are family here and that's what genealogy is all about. But our volunteers are VERY important to me and when it comes to them, the term "list mom" comes into play quite strongly. So Mom here wants to remind her "/children/" that you _must_ be very respectful to our volunteers. I ask that you not overload them by asking for general and multiple surname lookups. They are not here to do your research for you. They are here to "help" you out. So please dont overload them with these kinds of requests. If this applies to you, please dont be offended. It's just a reminder that our volunteers often do lookups for many many groups and sites. We are not the only ones that they serve. Often a request like this is done, due to lack of knowledge. So let me give you a sample of what I mean: I get a lookup from someone who is usually new to the site and has yet to acquire their own reference material. So they post a request for assistance. That is what we are here for. But in most instances a request for a lookup on "everything you can find on Jones" is NOT acceptable. Can you imagine the time it would take for me to look up and type out "everything I could find on the surname Jones"? Too many requests like this and our volunteers would quit! And we cant afford to loose any of them. Please be specific in your requests. What do you want, specifically? A more appropriate request would be. " I am looking for information on the surname Jones. I am a decendant of Robert Jones and we suspect he may have moved to Ripley Co due to census records we have found. I am just starting my research on this family group and I need to place his family specifically in Ripley Co. Can you look at the land records and see if he is listed there"? Then when you get a reply to this, based on what was found, you can ask another "specific" question on this line. Your volunteer has not wasted their time and you may end up with more leads to follow and more specific path to take. Then you can post another lookup request based on the info that was found or the lack of info. Jackie - "List Mom"
I went through the index and here's a list of everyone that I have biographies (sketches) on that are listed as being from Ripley Co. Since most of the requests for lookups are from persons doing research on people from Ripley Co (which would make sense being that this is a forum for Ripley Co :-) I went ahead and just listed those folks below. Again, if you have any requests for anyone outside of Ripley Co in the surrounding area please feel free to e-mail me and I'll do my best to look them up and see if they are in there. Also, if I missed anyone requesting a lookup I apologize and please e-mail me again. I would also request that you change the subject and add your surname to the end of the subject line for all future lookup requests. This will help me keep the requests straight so I'll know which surnames go where. If you have multiple surnames just add one to the subject then list them all in the body of the e-mail. James E. Adams John Morgan Atkinson Herman Borth John Percy Campbell Morgan White Cotton Zarah A. Eaton Christopher Columbus Hughes Thomas Mabrey Joel G. Claren Andrew J. McCollum John H. Nunnelee John F. Also mentioned in the History and Families of Ripley County are........ West Point Pentecostal Church - a natural stone building, but built after that date by about 20 years.
