Hi Kay Yes, that much of the family I do know about............the Smiths? Eliza's father was William Brackington "Brackin" Smith and hern mother was named Jane. The family migrated from Bledsoe Co., Tennessee circa 1850 to Laclede Co., Missouri. By 1860; Brackin Smith is deceased. I believe that my Eliza Jane Smith was the only child born in Missouri, having been born shortly after they moved there - say............1852 or so? Her Smith siblings? 1. Hannah L. (b1831) and married a Benajmin Prior. 2. John Wesley (b1832) and married Mary Ann "Polly" Mizer. 3. Margaret (b1836) 4. Nancy (b1838) that was married to a Thomas Mallory and it appears had quite a few children with Pleasant Beard for many years and finally married him upon the death of his wife circa 1877. 5. Minerva J. (b1839) who was married once to a Payton Gifford Chambers. Hers is a sad story. 6. Rachel J. (b1841) who was married to a Henry Clay Crow, This couple migrated to Lawrence Co., Arkansas. 7. Wyatt (b1844) that was married to Margaret Jane Wilson. 8. Spenser (b1845) that was first married to a Sarah, secondly to Sarah E. Arnold and last of all to a Margaret "Maggie" Havens. 9. And lastly, my Eliza Jane that married James William "Jim" Moore. I do have a vintage photograph of this couple. He looks the perfect picture of the ruddy faced Irishman and Eliza looks either to be Creek or Black Dutch. So.................are you lucky enough to research Smiths, also? What do you think? Ring any bells? Hi BJ and thanks for taking the time to answer my post. First, I think that you have made some possible connections that are really very interesting! My ggrandfather; James William Moore was first married, as I mentioned - to Eliza Jane Smith. This marriage took place in Laclede Co., Missouri in 1868. By 1910, he was married to a Lucy McDonald and living in Ripley Co., Missouri. James Moore and Eliza Smith Moore had a son named John Herman Moore. His wife; was a Bird Broadway and following the death of John Herman Moore; Bird remarried to a Henry Beecher Allen. I have nothing further on the Allen family - but, from what you are saying - I might find more information in Clay Co.? Now, this may sound silly - but, are you talking about Clay Co. being in Missouri or Arkansas? And you say there were some McDonalds living in this Clay Co., also? Another interesting note here is that Bird Broadway Moore Allen had a sister named Mary Magalene "Maggie" Broadway and her husband? Jacob "Jake" McDonald...................brother to Lucy McDonald Moore! Talk about some intermarrying here? So, thanks again for your time. I appreciate the direction you have steered me to. I don't have any information on the Moore family that you are interested in. I do know that there was a family of McDonald's that lived near the Pollard area in Clay County Arkansas, around that time. There was also a McDonald that was a school teacher there. Two of the McDonald girls married into the Allen Family. That would be McKimmie and Ella. Not sure if this is help to you or not. BJ
Prior to 1821 when MO became a state it was part of the Louisiana Purchase. In order to find original land records, one would probably have to gain access to the original plat maps for the area. Permanent boundaries for most of our states were not established until the late 1800s, and cartographers were still drawing maps and exploring regions in the Midwest prior to the Civil War and beyond when railroads came into vogue. Much of the early historic material for the Midwest is maintained in large university collections, but for information on the Louisiana Purchase lands, I believe the French records are located in New Orleans. I would appreciate any information you may find on Joseph Sullivan b Winslow, Pike County, Indiana d. Poplar Bluff, Butler County, Missouri and Married Nellie Van Winkle b. Gatewood, Ripley County, Missouri. Nellie Van Winkle was raised by the Charley Dodd Family in Gatewood. Thank you very much. Buford Dodd
Aloha I have been trying to research my father's Moore family for quite a few years now. It appears that I found my ggrandfather; James William Moore in the 1910 Ripley Co., Missouri census: 15 April 1910 Ripley Co., Missouri census, Thomas Township, Naylor Village: MOORE, James W. head M W 61 md/2 9 yrs IL KY KY #10/10 Lucie N. wife F W 40 md/1 9 yrs 3/3 AR MI AR Lucele daughter F W 4 single AR IL AR Luise daughter F W 3 single AR IL AR Lurna daughter F W 4/12 single AR IL AR His second wife; Lucie was a McDonald by birth as far as I have been able to determine. I have found a marriage record for an Etta Moore to a Nathan Gatlin on August 21, 1895; Ripley Co., Missouri and am curious as to if this Etta Moore is the daughter of James William Moore and Eliza Jane Smith. 28 April 1910 Ripley Co., Missouri census, Current River Township: GATLIN, Nathan head M W 39 md/1 15 yrs MO TN TN farmer #122/122 Ettie wife F W 34 md/1 15 yrs 7/4 MO TN TN Lena daughter F W 10 single MO MO MO Hubert son M W 8 single MO MO MO Earl son M W 6 single MO MO MO Arthur son M W 5 single MO MO MO 08 January 1920 Ripley Co., Missouri census, Current River Township: GATLIN, Nathan A. head M W 48 married MO KY MO farm operator #71/74 Etta B. wife F W 43 married MO TN MO Lorra V. daughter F W 20 single MO MO MO Hubart D. son M W 17 single MO MO MO Earle D. son M W 14 single MO MO MO Arthur O. son M W 12 single MO MO MO Lena M. daughter F W 9 single MO MO MO Lola L. daughter F W 7 single MO MO MO Would anyone have any additional information on this Gatlin couple at all? It seems like there used to be a searchable database on the Bureau of Land MAnagement, general land office, site....but apparently that is not up right now. Did you already look there? 1820 was before MO was a state (boy, I hope I'm right on that!!!), so I wonder if you'll have to dig into territorial records? Good luck!
