To fellow Missourian's.... Everyone by now know's about Hurricane Katrina and the havoc she has caused. Living here in Houston we are now neighbors to victims of this terrible tragedy and it is so hard to see the terror and hurt in their eyes. They have no where to go.....no money left.....no jobs.... Such a feeling of desperation. The children are so scared. Please help where and when you can. The Red Cross and United Way are both good ways to donate. If you cannot contribute, please pray hard for all affected by this terrible tragedy. Kay Emmons Hale

An explanation follows the letter: "Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio, March 20, 1862 Dear Mollie: You will doubtless be surprised to learn that I am in this region and in the confines of a prison. We were surrendered on the 8th instant at Island No. 10 by General Mackall, and not even a colonel had any intimation of it until it was announced that we were surrendered, as prisoners of war. I am happy to say, however, that we are well treated, and I hope we will be exchanged soon. I now have the painful necessity of informing you of the death of William D. Johnson, who died on the 16th instant of pneumonia and measles. I hope that you are all well at home, and that I may soon be permitted to visit you. I would write often, but it is very uncertain as to you receiving my letters. My respects to the friends and my love to you and the baby, Your husband, R.H. Riley." "CONFEDERATE DESCENDANTS: YOU'VE GOT MAIL" by Joe Blundo "Talk about snail mail: On April 20th 1862, a Confederate prisoner of war at Camp Chase in Columbus wrote a letter to Lt. Merrill E. Pratt in Alabama. It still hasn't been delivered. But Pratt's great-great-grandson and namesake knows where the letter is, and he wants it. ""It belongs to the family of whoever it was addressed to,"" said Merrill E. Pratt, a computer programmer who lives in Birmingham. The letter (and about 100 others from Camp Chase) has been the property of the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond since 1948. The letters arrived after passing through the hands of an Ohio spy, a state librarian and a newspaper editor. ""Wow, what a story,"" said Dennis Ranney, a Georgia free-lance researcher, formerly of New Albany, who has traced the letters' wanderings. The story begins at Camp Chase, a prison for captured Confederate soldiers. The prison is long gone, but its cemetery, holding the graves of more than two thousand Confederates, remains on Sullivant Avenue. (Ranney, who also uses the name Dennis Brooke, provided information for a Nov. 11 column on grave-robbing at the cemetery.) Among the Camp Chase prisoners in 1862 was Captain J.F. Whitfield of Alabama. He was captured when Union forces took Island 10 , a rebel stronghold in the Mississippi River. ""Our boys stood up to the enemy like men and brave soldiers...I was very proud of them indeed."" Whitfield wrote to Lt. Pratt, who had been sent home to Alabama on a recruiting trip, then fell ill. Whitfield's letter, and those of dozens of other POW's, was supposed to be taken to the South by Charlotte Moon Clark, an Ohioan and a cunning spy for the Confederacy. But before the letters could be delivered, Clark, who lived in Oxford and had brothers in the Confederate army, was arrested in Cincinnati on suspicion of espionage. She was later deported to the South. The letters never left Ohio. For whatever reason, they ended up at the Statehouse, where they lay until 1904, when the state librarian mentioned them to William H. Knauss of Columbus, a Civil War veteran who was writing ""The Story of Camp Chase"" Knauss used text from many of the letters in his book. (It lists Merrill E. Pratt as ""Merrill C."" and Whitfield as ""Whitefield."") The letters finally went south in 1948. The Virginia Historical Society says they were donated to its museum by Phillip Porter, then editor of the Plain Dealer in Cleveland. How the letters passed from the custody of the state library to Porter is unknown, Ranney said. (In 1985, Porter, 84 and long retired, was murdered, along with his wife, Dorothy, during a burglary at their home in Shaker Heights. The crime was unrelated to the letters.) Pratt's descendants learned of the letters only recently from Ranney. The historical society says anyone is welcome to see the letters but that it received them in good faith and plans to keep them. Pratt thinks the society should make copies and return the originals. His great-great-grandfather (who survived the war, as did Whitfield) wrote and received many letters that his family has preserved. ""But you can always find room for one more."" http://www.rootsweb.com/~jamwgw/ I need some input on this article that has been posted to rootsweb. It's an article on info they found, or did not find when they did the 1860 census for E. Felaciana Parish LA. Now Im wondering about our own census here in Ripley Co. Jackie -- "At the birth of the Sun, and his brother the Moon, their Mother died. So the Sun gave to the earth her body from which was to spring all life, And he drew forth from her breast the stars and he threw them into the night sky to remind him of her soul." Im throwing this out here to see if it clicks with anyone. 'Cause I need help! I am researching Harberd Towles of Ripley Co b. TN... Here is some new info I found. He is on the 1850 census in Humphreys Co TN living with a WAGGONER. Looks like his siblings are scattered throughout the county also, living with FOLKS, LUCAS, and JACKSON families. I realize these may be child laborers in these homes but often they were extended family so Im checking for the /slimest/ of leads here. I suspect Harberd is connected to the Warren Co TN Towles but no proof yet. If any of you have the slightest connections to any of these lines could you contact me on this. Harbred Towles b. Nov 06, 1842 in TN d. June 22, 1889 in Ripley Co MO b. Towles Cem Ripley Co MO m. Hanna Jane unknown, then Elizabeth Jane Harrington Cude 2nd. He lived from age 17 until his death in Ripley Co MO. I recently found him (at last!) on the 1850 census in Humphreys Co TN (see below). It appears that the children (he and siblings), are dispersed among 4 families in Humphreys Co. Surnames are Jackson, Folks, Waggoner and Lucas. At this point I am not aware of any connection between these families and my Towles other than this 1850 census. Does any of this info register with you or have you run across new info that may be of help to me? (suspect he was the son of Joseph S. Towles and Sarah Wood of Warren Co TN). No proof, just gut feeling. Below are the details for you..... Other collateral names associated with this line are. HARRINGTON, THOMAS (the other Thomas line, not Ephriam), KELLY, PONDER (Pleasant John), POLK, MCCAULEY, PAYNE,CUDE, and TEETERS. Jackie 1850 Census Humpheries Co TN shows this to be Harbred Tolls in the actual image. This census was taken on 17th and 18th of Oct. 1860 which would make this Harbred Tolls the right age. sorry for these long letters getting to the list.. Pat
This is really interesting. Thanks for sending. I have seen the cemetery near there and the names sound so familiar. Might be one of my William A Murrells relatives.. but the Briggs Murrell seems to have come from another line that is documented.. there were soooo many Williams you could go crazy trying to figure them out. Dates are too late to be helpful in getting to William A parents but if I could run into someone that had more information on their line might be of help. You sure do dig up allot of interesting thing!! How have you been? Still living near Cape Girardeau? I have been taking care of grandchildren again this summer. It is about time for school to start so that will be over in a couple more weeks. I went to St Louis on the 23 of July to my dad's last relative, his sister's 60 th wedding anniversary. They had gone to Cape Girardeau and married after Lloyd got home from WWII. They did not have any family or friends there and did not even know the witnesses. She had always wanted to have a minister marry them and have some family there. She almost waited too late. She only had two children and one of them is dead. I was the only one besides her daughter and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was such a happy time but one has to be a little sad to realize not likely they will have #70 and that one will die and leave the other. My aunt like my dad was born in a log cabin on my great grandfather's homestead. My grandmother inherited it when both her parents died. Other people lived there until she married and was able to claim it. Some story. My dad became a teacher and guidance counselor. He went to school until he retired. His dad did not know how to read and write, yet his grandfather had a post office at Dry Spring, MO from about 1855 until it closed in 1895. Civil War and depression changed allot of people's lives during those years I guess. Hard for some to believe but I am the first in my family on both sides to have a birth certificate. Karen remind me what lines you are searching for again? I have started writing them down since I realize that I don't remember them like I did.. don't ever get old. I know this blood sugar is causing me to have not much short term memory .. I talked to a woman I went to High School with in 1956 on Tuesday. We talked like we had always been in touch.. but I cant remember what I cooked yesterday. It was so nice to hear from her again and to know she was well and a 63 year old can be. She had a good life. She used to have to get up and milk cows at four am by lantern light before she could go to school. I had led a pretty sheltered life up until then. Later I had hard times and often remember how hard she had it just to go to school. I think knowing her gave me courage and knowledge that people can get thought tough times. Her father was killed in a truck accident when she was about 12 or so. Let me hear from you.. and thanks for never forgetting me and sending me all those good things especially from MO. The consolidation of the Desloge and Murrill districts is the biggest thing that has happened in educational circles in this county for several years. Miss Marguerite Warren, principal of the Esther High School, writes: "Recently a Parent-Teachers' meeting was held in the school assembly room. Discussions were led by several of the patrons, also the teachers, and the principal talk of the evening given by our County Superintendent, Mr. Akers, said many good things, and to a noticeable degree achieved the difficult task of getting his audience into perfect sympathy with his point of view. During his talk he quoted a few appropriate lines from Kipling's "L'Envoi." This beautiful poem is said to have been a favorite selection of the elder Mr. Akers, who was so beloved by the people of St. Francois county. Monday morning the school "showed her colors" by decorating her rooms and her children with small American flags. A most patriotic spirit prevailed throughout the day and a sound of applause was heard whenever Mr. Danuser, bearing an American flag, entered any of the rooms. Congress was ushered in with due regard by the loya! l future citizens of Esther." List of pupils recently receiving attendance certificates from this office, continued: Nellie McFarland, Beulah Byers, Bernice Arenz, Maggie Bailey, Charles Jones, Edward Gilliam, Thelma Robinson, Lester Skaggs and Arthur Fleeman, of the Frankclay school; Hazel Huff and Maude Huff, of the King school; and John Eaves, Pearl Gruner, Georgie Self and Earl Kassabaum, of the Doe Run school. Thomas Murrill, Acy Jackson, George Dogget, John Day, Joseph Coleman, John Delona, King Williams, James Williams, George Crump, Isaac Crump, Edmund Crump, William Murrill and Briggs Murrill, neighbors living southwest of Bonne Terre, worked together and built the Murrill School House. This was the first school house ever built in the vicinity and so was a cause for rejoicing. Consequently the women of the neighborhood worked together and gave a basket dinner celebrating the completion of the school. The women who gave the dinner were Mesdames: George, Isaac and Edmund Crump, Martha Jackson, Fannie Jackson, Mary Ann Williams, Pomelia Williams, Rachael Murrill, Mary Day, Lutetia Delona, Frances Coleman and Jennette Murrill, who were the wives of the men who built the school. The first teacher was Mrs. AuBuchon affectionately called Grandmother AuBuchon. School is still taught at Murrill School and, little log house though it is, it has educated some men that Bonne Terre is proud to own as among her best citizens. I live in Spartanburg Co, SC. It is very hard for me to check probate records or newspapers. The Joseph McElrath that married Nancy Maddox in Ripley Co could very well be the son of George W.
