    2. Wow!!! Didn't expect you to put all of the information that I sent you in the listing. Thank you so very much. I still have a lot of other photo's that I have taken from other cemetery's. Will send them to you as soon as I can. I sure hope I can get some information on the Boshears, Pattersons, Franklin's and Arnold's. I'm sure there is someone out there that remembers my Great Aunt Pearl Franklin, I do. Thanks again for all your hard work. BJ

    3. Thanks for the remindedr BJ. No, they are not misplaced. I have quite a few photos that have been sent to me by members of this list. They are in a holding folder to get posted. I just had these other photos that our volunteer group had taken and they were in a different file. So to you and all the folks that sent me photos for posting, please be patient. This is a HUGE project. We are working toward getting them done and I'll get them posted soon. Just hang in there for me. And as always, a reminder of something not posted is not offensive. With my memory I need it....lol Jackie BettyPhillipsB@aol.com wrote: >Jackie, >I sent a bunch of pictures of the Boshears and Arnold's to you for Oak Grove >Cemetery. are they miss placed, do I need to try to resend them? 3. Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 2nd ed., 1885, Butler Co. WILLIAM H. HAWES belongs to one of the pioneer families of Butler County. When the woods of Kentucky resounded with the halloo [sic] of the hunter, when the trail of scouting and trapping expeditions were the only roads, and the settlers' cabins few and far between, the grandfather of Mr. Hawes came from North Carolina and established a home for himself and his descendants. His son, William, the father of our subject, was born in Butler (then Logan) County, in 1797, and was the first white child born in the Green River country. William H. Hawes was born near Rochester, December 15, 1839. He commenced business for himself at the age of twenty-one, and raised his first crop in 1859. In September, 1861, he enlisted in Company D, Eleventh Kentucky Infantry, and served three years and three months. During all that time, he was with one exception with his regiment, and participated in many engagements, among which may be mentioned, Shiloh, Stone River, siege of Knoxville, and was in the Georgia campaign twenty miles south of Atlanta. He was mustered out on the 16th of December, 1864, at Bowling Green. On the 14th of March, 1865, Mr. Hawes was married to Margaret, eldest daughter of Amos and Nancy (Brown) Russ, born in Butler County, May 15, 1840. Her grandfather, Austin Brown, was a soldier in the second war with England, and participated in the battle of New Orleans. Mr. and Mrs. Hawes have had six children, four of whom are living: James Palace, Oliver Ollas, Margaret Effey, and Robert Everett. The family are members of the Baptist church. Their farm consists of ninety acres of upland with comfortable home, convenient buildings, etc. Mr. Hawes has identified himself with the Republican party. 3. Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 2nd ed., 1885, Butler Co. MARION WASHINGTON HAWES, Butler County, is the son of John and Nancy Hawes. The former was a native of North Carolina, born in 1815, and removed to Butler County with his father, John Hawes, at an early day, and settled on the Little Bend of the Green River, near "Hawes" Ferry, to which his name was given. John Hawes, subject's father, was, by occupation, a farmer, owning a large tract of valuable land in the valley of the Green. He was an excellent citizen, a prominent member of the Monticello Baptist Church. He died about 1858. Subject's mother, Nancy (Layne) Hawes, died in 1842. They were the parents of nine children, only two of whom are now living: Marion W. and a younger brother, Greenbury Wallace, now residing in Texas. Our subject, Marion W., was born at the old homestead on the banks of Green River, on February 16, 1844; educated in the common schools and reared on the farm. In September, 1861, he enlisted in Company F, Eleventh Kentucky and served honorably three years and three months. His service was principally in Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi and Virginia. He participated in the celebrated battles of Shiloh, Stone River, Perryville, siege of Knoxville, Blain's Cross Roads, and in the campaign to Atlanta. He was a brave soldier, and always with his regiment. He was married three times; first to Harriet Barbrey, February 22, 1865, and by her had two children: David Jarret, born December 11, 1866, and died in 1881; John French, born October 22, 1872. Mrs. Harriet Hawes departed this life in 1878. His second wife was Emily Layne, who died in 1880. Mr. Hawes married his third wife, Frances Pendley, in 1884. Mr. Hawes' farm consists of 110 acres, mostly rich bottom lands, with a good home, and all the evidences of thrift and industry. He is a member of the Monticello Baptist Church, and a Republican in politics, also an industrious and honest citizen. 3. This is for the Haws researchers.. or Hawes or Hahs researchers. I know of Mary Hahs and she was from KY.She live at the state line in a community of Dismangs, Taylors, Murdocks, Wilsons, Johnsons, Murrells etc. I have been trying to find a connection between our lines.I have not nor do I know if this Haws could be related.. just FYI pat Memorial Record of Western Kentucky, Volume I and Volume II, Lewis Publishing Company, 1904, pp. 166-168. Ballard Co. JAMES H. THARP Judge James Howard Tharp, who served for two terms as county judge of Ballard county, and is now practicing law in Wickliffe, was born on a farm in this county on the 17th day of May, 1846. Hie parents were Frelin and Nancy (Hawes) Tharp, the former a native of North Carolina, while the latter was born near Hawesville, Kentucky. The paternal grandfather of our subject was Esais Tharp, who with his family left North Carolina and took up his abode in Ballard county, Kentucky, but only made a temporary location here. Soon he continued on his way to Missouri, and died after a brief residence in that state. Frelin Tharp was about sixteen years of age when his father's death occurred, and was the eldest of several sons, whom the mother bound out to learn trades. Not liking the idea of being bound to a master, Frelin objected, and then ran away from home. Soon afterward, however, he returned to Kentucky, and for some time worked on keel boats on the Tennessee river, while later he was employed on steamboats making trips to New Orleans. He ran on the river for some ten or eleven years, and in this way managed to acquire some capital. In 1833, having secured a quarter-section of land in what is now Carlisle county, Kentucky, he located thereon, but soon traded it for a tract in the northern part of Ballard county, along the Ohio river. He was married in Ballard county, in 1835, and took his bride to his farm. Later he exchanged his second place for a farm just west of Barlow City, upon which he spent his remaining days. This farm is now the property of Judge Tharp. Frelin Tharp was a prosperous agriculturist, and in connection with farming also acted as pilot on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers to a greater or less extent, making many trips to New Orleans after locating in Ballard county. He also raised considerable stock and developed good farming property, which increased greatly in value, owning to the many improvements he made upon it. In his political views he was a stalwart Democrat. His death occurred in 1867, when he was sixty-three years of age, and his wife passed away the previous year, when fifty-one years of age. They were the parents of seven children: Miletus II and Minus A., both deceased; James H.; Oscar T., also deceased; Sarah E., who resides in Barlow City, Kentucky; and two who died in infancy. James H. Tharp was reared and educated in Ballard county, spending his boyhood days upon the home farm, where he remained until after the death of his parents. When they had passed away he took charge of the old homestead and continued to make his home thereon until he was elected county judge of Ballard county, in 1890. He filled the position acceptably for a term of four years and was then re-elected, so that he continued in the office for two terms. After his retirement from the county bench he served as city judge of Wickliffe for two years. In the meantime he had taken up the study of law, and in 1901 was admitted to the bar. He then opened an office in Wickliffe, where he has since engaged in practice and is now enjoying a good clientage. He was elected to his different positions on the Democratic ticket. In connection with his law practice he still engaged in farming, owning the old homestead, to the operation of which he gives his personal supervision. In 1868 Mr. Tharp was united in marriage to Miss Joan Waggoner, who died in 1886, leaving him ten children, of whom nine are now living. In 1890 he was again married, his second union being with Mrs. Matie (or Matilda) Tanner, nee Metcalfe, by whom he has three living children. The Judge is a Royal Arch Mason and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and throughout the years of his residence in Ballard county he has so lived as to win the regard of his fellow-men, gaining high reputaton by reason of his public-spirited citizenship, his fidelity and promptness in office and his faithfulness in friendship. 3. I am trying to break down a brick wall here and need some help. What I am looking for specifically is the maiden name of Hannah Jane Towles, wife of Harbred Towles of Ripley Co MO. I have census info on Harbred for 1860, and 1870 (name spelled Toles on that one). According to census info it looks like they may have married about 1866. I do not see them on the marriage listings for Ripley Co MO. I do show her burial at the Sandlin Cem on the Current River in Ripley Co. dod May 30, 1872. I need an obit on her if possible.
