There is a Colley farm on Current River just north of Current View, which was known as Buckskull during the Civil War. I haven't read the book, but does it mention Buckskull? Hello and isn't that just the best book! I have also been trying to pin-point the area and the best I can do is north-east of Doniphan in the Grandin area. That is Johnson Township, not Jackson as Miss Jiles uses, but alot of the landmarks are in that area like "Devils Backbone", Little Black River. I believe the Old Military Road went through there also. I hope this helps and if any of this information is wrong, hopefully someone out there will correct me. I wish I knew more as I was born in Doniphan but left when I was 13 so all of this history is news to me too even at the "tender age" of 70. ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237
I have been looking for a history or anything written about Buck Skull. You are the 1st person I have ever seen ,.... mention it. My gr. gr.father was reportedly killed by an Indian uprising at Buck Skull ,..... as near as I can place the date,.... mid to late 1870's. I haven't been able to find anything about it. Do you know where I could search? Any help will be appreciated !! Hi Norma Jeane Did you know the Robert Clark family? He was also called Leon. His children were James known as Jake, he married Dovey Shipman. Some of Jakes brothers and sisters were Eddie, Nora, Nelle, Walter. The Shipman family was related to the Lowry family. Hi--I'm new to the list. My cousin recently spoke with an elder in our Foy family who told this story: One of our ancestors, John B. Foy, lived on the Arkansas-Missouri border and "helped the Negroes cross the river". She meant the Current river . She said before the Civil War, Negroes weren't allowed in Ripley Co. and "Grandpa Foy's old folks helped sneak the Negroes into the county acdross the river and helped hide them until they could move on north out of the county." Does anyone know anything about this? Was there an underground railroad through Ripley Co.? And why weren't blacks allowed in the county then? Any help from anyone would be appreciated. Don't know about the underground railroad but I do know that several families owned slaves in Ripley County prior to the Civil War. You can verify this by checking the Ripley County Census prior to the Civil War.

Since it is a novel, a lot will be fiction, but many places named in the book still exist today. There are also paragraphs before each chapter about the Civil War that have references. I found the book very interesting, but am really wondering about the location.
