    3. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: "Ray Heyden Burson" <[email protected]> Merrell Family Former local historian Jerry Ponder has long held that one of his ancestors, Nancy Emeline Merrell, first wife of Daniel Kinzie Crockett Ponder was killed by Union soldiers during the so-called Christmas "Massacre" skirmish at Pulliam's farm on Dec. 25, 1863. A tattered Daniel K. Ponder family bible was handed over to the Ripley Couinty Historical Society yesterday. It was found in an old house that was being torn down and had the following entries for Nancy Emeline Merrell -- "Nancy Emeline Ponder was born April the 1- 1832." "Daniel K. Ponder and Nancy Emeline Merrell was married November 28, 1851." "Nancy Emeline Ponder departed this life January 23d - 1864." -- Ray Burson, Ripley County Historical Society

    2. Henry, The following found in "Ripley Co. Records - Obituaries" by Thelma McManus, pg. 233 - 25 Aug 1910 Hutton A. KEITH, age 68, died Tuesday evening of Consumption. Came to county several years ago - lived in Union Township many years. Taken to Union Cemetery for burial. pg. 234 - 8 Sept 1910 Hutson A. KEITH, born Tenn. 19 Feb 1842, died near Doniphan 23 Aug 1910, age 68 yrs. 6 mths, 4 da. Went to Ill as a boy, married 8 Aug 1862 to Jane GREAR. 6 children born, wife and one daughter dead. Moved to county @25 years ago, to Doniphan 15 years ago. Presbyterian Church member - enlisted 15 Aug 1862 in Co. I, 87th Ill, Mtd. Inf. at Carmi, Ill - mustered out at Helena, Ark. 8 Jun 1865. Surviving children are: J.H. Keith, Centerville, MO, H.A. Keith jr., Mrs. Green Cavens, Mrs. Philip Napier and Mrs. Phillip Herman, all of county. Buried Union Cemetery near Ponder. "Ripley Co. Records - Cemeteries Part II" by Thelma McManus pg. 36 - Union Grove Cemetery KEITH, Margaret . . . d. 12 Mar 1893, age 87y, 8m, 28da KEITH, Hudson A. . . 19 Feb 1842 - 23 Aug 1910 Other related obits: pg. 43 - 8 Jan 1886 Inf of Mr & Mrs J.T. KEITH, buried here Wednesday evening of last week. pg. 84 - 1 Jan 1891 Mrs. Mary GRISSOM, mother of Mrs. J.T. KEITH, died at the Keith home on Thursday afternoon, 31 Dec at age nearly 85 years. Came here with Major KEITH and family @ 8 yrs ago from Vienna, Ill. Will be buried in family cemetery 6 miles east of Vienna. Death due to old age, but probably hastened by a fever and attack of grippe. pg. 110 - 23 Sept 1897 - 2 month old babe of Mr. & Mrs. John KEITH, who live near Tabor Mill place on Big Barren in Carter Co., died last Monday night at home of Hut KEITH, father of John. Buried Tuesday at Towles Cemetery. Babe had ailed since birth. The marriage records for Ripley Co. are on the website and you'll find several of your KEITH marriages there. I didn't see this family in Ripley on the 1880 census, and the obituary suggests timeframe of about 1885, so I suspect a check of the 1880 census in Illinois would find the KEITH family. Carmi, Illiois is in White Co. The Illinois marriages are on-line and the following is listed . . . KEITH, HUDSON A to GREER, SARAH J WHITE CO. 08/21/1862 KEITH, HUTSON A to SCOTT, CHARLOTTE GARRETT (MRS) WHITE CO. 09/09/1886 I'll leave you to play with this. Pamela G. Smith Gresham, OR

However, I obviously did not make a copy of my note to you - it must have been one of the ones on the rootsweb page. Was this for Giles, Prater or Jackson? We are not having a lot of luck finding anything on the Giles and very little on Prater. Any information you have about good places to research in those counties would be appreciated. 1. [MORIPLEY] Rogers Graveyard
    2. Nadeen McOsker
    3. Oops, I just realized that I failed to show the Township as being 24 North on my previous post regarding the possible "Rogers Graveyard". I just came home from the Ripley County Courthouse where I tried to see what I could find out about this cemetery. The 1st reference that I was able to find was on the Deed when Wiloby Roggers purchased this property from Willis McCusky & Wife in Jan 31, 1873. It showed 1/4 acre to be reserved for the "unnamed" graveyard. The ladies at the courthouse tried to help me in determining which graveyard is being referenced in this Deed but we were unable to find it listed either by name or by location. It apparently is an old family graveyard on private land. This could be where Willoughby Rodgers is buried? If you know anything about this graveyard, please let me know. Thanks, Nadeen

I have found reference to a graveyard on property being sold by the heirs of Willoughby Rodgers. This property is located in Ripley County, Section 22, Township North, Range 3East. I would love to locate this cemetery. Anything that you know about this cemetery would be most helpful! Please note my new email addy: [email protected] Thanks, Nadeen
