1. [MORIPLEY] Destruction of Wills in Virginia
2. Dear Fellow Searchers: I wrote to Barbara Vines Little regarding the Bill currently being considered in Virginia that would allow the clerks to destroy oruiginal Wills after they had been microfilmed, asking if we could help by making our voices heard. She has responded, and from the number of responses I received in just posting the original notice, I know many people feel that some alternative such as donating the original documents to a Historical Society or a library would be a much better solution than simply destroying them. Below is Ms. Little's reponse. I certainly hope many of you will take the time to respond to the address she has listed in her message and let your feelings be known regarding this pending legislation. As we have all experienced from trying to read Census Records and other old documents that have been microfilmed, glitches do happen and information can be unreadable or lost. These Wills contain much of the early history of this country, and losing this valuable resource is truly going to be a travesty for all who seek information on their ancestors who may have lived or landed on Virginia soil and then emigrated to other parts of the United States. Perhaps we need to remind these elected officials of the importance of preservation and suggest an alternate means of solving whatever problem prompted them to write this bill in the first place. Please share this with anyone you feel would be interested in helping in this effort. Judy Neu Springwater, NY Thank you. It isn't too late to call or write our Virginia Senators & Delegates. Please do so. find the legislator here: http://legis.state.va.us/ Virginia Senate Bill 818, Destruction of will files. Allows the clerk to destroy a will's file along with the original will after it is no longer of any value and after it has been microfilmed. 3. Odom Cemetery The remains of an old cemetery, pre-dating the Civil War, on what is known as the "old Odom place" - a large cemetery on a bluff overlooking the north prong of the Little Black River. Over grown and virtually inaccessible at the time this original listing was made with Mr. and Mrs. Hume Skaggs in Oct of 1972. Much later this cemetery was said to be on the "Emmons homeplace" - both families have been in Ripley Co. since about 1837 and have intermarried. Additional information was obtained from Mrs. John (Inez) McKinney) Borth of Doniphan in Sept of 1973. It is owned privately by a son-in-law of Hume Skaggs. Many Many graves are unmarked and unknown. Last burial according to markers occured in 1942. Denise, There are entirely too many listings for me to type them all up here. I would recommend you buy a copy of "Ripley Co. Records Cemeteries Part III by Thelma McManus 507 Vine St. Doniphan MO 63935 $15.00 Odom's listed here are: Daniel - 25 Dec 1851 - 5 Nov 1930 unmarked but known to be buried here Minerva Elizabeth (Stephens) 8 Feb 1856 - June 1892 - first wife of Daniel Emmons - her parents were ZW and Melissa (Woods) Stephens Unmarked. Dempsey - 1815 - ? unmarked Delilah (Emmons) @ 1815 - 7 Jul 1899 age 84 y unmarked obit in PN 20 Jul 1899 Sarah (Webb) Emmons - unmarked - no dates - she first married Martin Emmons and later became Daniel Odom's second wife. Martin - a son of Dempsey and Delilah (Emmons) Odom - unmarked - he was killed during the Civil War and is presumed to be buried here. Grif. - "died last Monday night" age @ 14 - 15 years. Unmarked - obit in PN 24 Jul 1885 Theophelus died 2 Oct 1881 - unmarked - age @ 40 - 41 years obit in PN 7 Oct 1881 Many other members of the ODOM family are probably buried here in unmarked graves. Also.. FYI ... there is a small town called ODOM 2 counties over in Howell Co. between West Plains and Willow Springs. 3. Unless someone can make a trip to the local paper for you or the city library, I dont think there is access to one. I know there are no recent collections of obits for Ripley. I am not close enough to do that or I would. You might try contacting the local historical society and see if they can give you a hand. 2. I am certain I am not the only person whose early ancestors lived in VA and I thought perhaps, someone might want to know of this legislation. Allows the clerk to destroy a will's file along with the original will after it is no longer of any value and after it has been microfilmed. Has been reported out of committee. Senator Thomas K. 1. Re: [MORIPLEY] Re: The little white church
2. My ancesters (Plunks, Niswongers, and Burnleys) lived in Doniphan MO - in the time period ab 1870. They moved to Popular Bluff at some point before 1908. In 1908 they went from Poplar Bluff, Mo to Okla in wagons. I'm trying to find the location/denomination of a church they attended before they left Mo. My mom calls it "the little white church". I think it was more likely in Doniphan. Would anyone on this list have any information about this church or any ideas about where I could look to find out? Thanks, nancy
