He was born to parents Henry Allen and Irene Green March 24, 1910 in Lawson, (Ray Co.) Mo. He moved to La Grande, Ore. as a youngster and it was at this time he began his lifelong passion for the railroad and steam engines. In 1923, his family moved to Toledo, and in 1933, he married Alice Murray in Toledo. In 1945, after studying refrigeration repair, he started his own business in Toledo. In 1952, he moved his family to Northern California, including Napa, Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Graton. He did appliance repair for Montgomery Wards and later worked at VanBebber Machine shop in Petaluma as a precision machinist. In 1969, he and his wife moved to Philomath. During the next 25 years he did independent refrigeration work for many small restaurants in Lincoln and Benton counties. Small bakeries, stores, restaurants, coffee shops and individuals came to depend on him for his repair skills as well as his retorts, independent thinking and ever-present overalls. He loved trains, fishing, Newport and local history. He also loved socializing at the Old World Deli in Corvallis, where he is immortalized in a hand-painted ceiling mural. He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Alice; daughter, Dolores Rhines; and brother, Bill Green. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Green Petterson and Joe Petterson of Monmouth; brother, Bob Green of McMinnville; and numerous grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren.
