I found an Elkana Adams in Richmond Twp, Ray County, MO on the 1870. He was listed as male with parents, Thomas and Sarah and six siblings. This Elkana was 7 years old. He and one other sibling were shown as being born in Kansas. Everyone else in the household was shown as being born in Missouri. I found this family living in Leavenworth County, Kansas on the 1880 census. This time, Elkana was listed as a 16 year old female. If you check the LDS site at familysearch.com and do a search for a Elkana Adams, you will see that someone else has drawn this same conclusion probably based on the census. I hope this helps you.
