    1. Fw: Information Release from Curry Library
    2. On May 23, 2003, William Jewell College’s Curry Library was approved for a Digital Imaging grant of $12,000 from the Missouri State Library. The purpose of the grant was to digitize 32 years of the Liberty Tribune newspaper and make it available on the Historic Missouri Newspapers web site. A previous Library Services and Technology Act funded grant provided funding to digitize eight years of the Tribune. The completed project covers April 1846 to April 1886. William Jewell College currently owns the only paper copies of these early years of the Liberty newspaper. The Tribune has not been indexed; therefore as a service to the wider community of researchers, we enlisted the assistance of the University of Missouri’s Library Systems Office to help make these resources available to a wider audience via the web. Through the use of Olive Software Active Newspaper Archive software, all issues may be browsed as well as searched by full-text. This run of years was selected because it includes the very first issue in 1846 and runs through the Civil War years. Our goal was to increase public access to the abundance of information contained in the Liberty Tribune, both text and advertisement. We hope you will visit the site often. The direct link to the Historic Missouri Newspapers site is: http://newspapers.umsystem.edu/archive/Skins/Missouri/navigator.asp?skin=Misso uri&BP=OK A special thanks to Kurt Kopp, Assistant Director-Electronic Resources (University of Missouri) and the Missouri State Library for assisting us and promoting digitization projects. He supposedly came to the Ray--Carroll Counties' area with his paternal aunt, Polly Stephenson, ca. 1828. It is not known if Sadie came with the other two Stephensons or not. I am trying to find anyone that may have known of David & Polly, and perhaps Sadie, also. David married Louisa Griffith in 1856, in Nodaway County. The couple had a son, James Andrew, who married Rebecca Jennie Jones ca. 1880, in Carroll County. Any help someone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dennis.

I knew about the Clevenger book and took a chance because the Clevengers were such a large family and were in Ray County from the beginning. Almost everyone around here is related to them in one way or another. The Clevengers were in Ray, Carroll, Caldwell, and Daviess counties. You can go to the following website and find the original land entry for Ichabod Hall: glorecords.blm.gov This is the website for the General Land Office Records. When you get to ther homepage, click on SEARCH LAND PATENTS. You can print off an actual copy of the record. There are two listed for Ichabod. Let me know if you have trouble, I can type them out for you, scan them to your email, or mail you a hard copy. Jeanne

Just as I suspected: the North portion of Marion was taken by Caldwell in 1836 and the Southern remaider in Ray Co taken by Knoxville in 1841. More importantly, you established their precise location by finding the information on the land sale by Ichabod Hall !! Also, the sale date helps confirm their departure date from Ray to Andrew Co where they were in May 1848, and later in the 1850 census !! How did you happen to run across this land sale to the Clevengers?? The Halls supposedly purchased land in Ray in 1837, but I do not have confirmation of that yet. I suspect that this is the same land that they sold in 1848. You have been a tremendous help. Thank you again. Ray

Page 246: Knoxville township was established in 1841. It comprises all of congressional township fifty-four, range twenty-eight; twelve sections in township fifty-four, range twenty-seven; eight sections in township fifty-three, same range, and twenty-four sections in township fifty-three, range twenty-eight. The sections, eight in all, are, of course, contiguous, and form an area of 51,200 acres. The number of inhabitants of the township, as shown by tenth census, including Knoxville and Taitsville, with a population of eighty-eight and one hundred and eight respedtively, is 2,301. Knoxville township was settled about 1833. Something else that you may already have... In THE CLEVENGER FAMILIES OF RAY COUNTY, MISSOURI, page 146 is the following: 7 Feb 1848--Icabod Hall sold to Benjamin Clevenger: 40 A; $100: S W 1/4 of S W 1/4 Sec. [34 or 35] Twp. 54, Ran. 29 This was shown as being taken from: Ray Co., MO Deed Records, Bk F, page 220. Jeanne

Now all I have to do interpret the description on my township map. My ancestor, Gatsey Trewit Hall, and her husband Ichabod Hall were among the inhabitants of Marion Co in the late 1830s and in the 1840 census. It appears that Marion was used for not much longer. No townships were used in the 1850 census for Ray and Marion was not included among the townships for the 1860 census. Knoxville township appears in the 1860 census and probably took the place of Marion. I have not been able to find the creation date for Knoxville Township. Does your history book mention Knoxville Twnshp? Thank you very much for your interest and help. Ray

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XNB.2ACI/728.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Since the information was given from the Caldwell County, MO standpoint, I was thinking that 'other territory' would be in Ray County. Just in case, I do have the following taken from, THE HISTORY OF RAY COUNTY, 1881, page 240. The county court, May 7, 1832, ordered that a new township be erected out of Richmond township, and named Marion township, with the following boundaries, viz: Beginning at the corner of sections twenty-three and twenty-six and of twenty-seven and twenty-eight, in congressional township fifty-three, range twenty-seven; thence due north to line between townships fifty-six and fifty-seven; thence west with said line to range line between ranges twenty-eight and twenty-nine; thence south with said range line to corner of sections nineteen and thirty, and of twenty-four and twenty-five, in congressional township fifty-three; thence east to beginning. It will be observed that Marion township included four congressional townships in what is now Caldwll county. It contained one hundred and five taxable inhabitants. At the May term, 1832, of he county court, a new township was established and named Grand River. It was the same width, and lay northeast of Marion township, just described, extending to the state line, and embaced an area no part of which is within the present Ray county. Shoal Creek township was established in June, 1825, by the Ray county court. It lay due north of Marion township, and no part of it is in the Ray county of today. As has been stated, the territory embraced by the original limits was reduced from time to time till, in the year 1836, by the formation of Caldwell county, it was left with its present area. Jeanne
