I have a copy, and would be glad to transcribe the article for you, if you would like it. You are correct about Charles A OGG - he was born in 1876 and died in 1885. The article does not reference any sources of information, so one will have to take it at face value. Robert in Arkansas

    2. Dear Lisa: I guess I should apologize. Too bad you did not get the opportunity to read post posts as you might have had a different opinion. I posted my message because I thought others might have taken it out of context too. I do not like being insulted which I was. I will be very careful in the future as to what I post. I am from leading families in Clay and Ray counties both so if I learn something about them personally I will think twice before posting. Vivian

    1. North Kansas City
    2. I received an email this morning informing me about the difference between North Kansas City and Kansas City North and just how knowledgeable they were. They totally took my email out of context as I was not condemning anyone's knowledge. I did reply as to why I am so proud of North Kansas City. Here is my reply just in case so I could have insulted you as this was not my intention. I apologize that I touched a sensitive nerve and you took my post completely out of context. Since you chose to not post this to the MORay I will not want to either as I don't want to embarrass you in anyway. My daughter is a teacher and I well know by address which is in what city and what school district. North Kansas City is an old old town too but a wonderful place to live because of the tax base we have and what it brings us in benefits, with the industrial area and the river boat casino. Our property sells for far more than it would in Kansas City North or Liberty just for these reasons. I know many posted in the Tapes that we were selfish because we didn't share our income with outsiders; which, if they would read correctly would have known we did and still do. Until the Liberty Hospital and St. Luke's North was built none of you would have had a hospital as the people being taxed here built the North Kansas City Hospital. Then even before the other hospitals were built outsiders complained because all the members of the hospital board were residents of North Kansas City...so we did invite others to serve. There wouldn't be as nice a park as Macken park for outsiders to use if we didn't have it and it is a very very nice one as you know. Then the outsiders complained about letting the residents have first choice for dates to use the park. We get free trash pick up 3 times a week, Our water bill runs about $10.00 per month, our real estate taxes are very cheap, we do not have to have an auto tax sticker, Our trees are beautiful and taken care of completely by the city of any part that hangs over the sidewalk. Our fireman come to the elderly or handicapped homes to change or install smoke alarms. Our police force has more officers per capita than any other place that I know of. Our personal property taxes are very very low as well as our real estate taxes. We are now in the process of building new homes, apartments and townhouses which will only enhance this little city. We have some nice restaurants a very reasonably priced grocery store and a beautiful downtown area even if there not a choice of business as we had before Metro North was built. Of course you know Antioch Shopping Center is already dead and due to be torn down, and Metro North is close to drawing it's last breath. We had for years a free taxi ride anywhere in the city for the elderly and handicapped, and people misused it so we now have a Metro handicapped equipped bus that we can ride anywhere in the city for 10 cents. In the past 3 years they have relined all our sewer system, and laid down new sidewalks and used decorative paving bricks in the downtown area. We have a 20 million dollar well equipped community center which people all over the area since they live or work in this area are members. Our rates for a membership are less than any other in greater Kansas City. Soon they will start building retail/office space. I also should mention any household discard you might have if you can get it to the curb it is hauled off. Our yard waste is also picked up and we do not have to buy paper grass bags. I have done business with the same pharmacy through 4 owners for the past 45 years. We had a business here until we retired in 1978. So you can see why I am so proud to be a resident of North Kansas City and have had enough experience to know what I am talking about. We may not be a very fancy city and our homes are very old but well kept why we are a proud people and do not want bank robberies, rapes and burglaries or any other crimes reported to be in North Kansas City when they actually are in Kansas City North. The new homes they are building are starting at $200,000.00 and are selling fairly quickly so others must see the joy they can enjoy to become a resident. Vivian

    3. Shirley (et al), I drive that area alot too. So, since we will *never* agree about whether Elkhorn is in the K.C. Metro area, or not, let us not confuse the researcher further. Let's just go back to my original statement that Elkhorn is on highway 10 between Excelsior Springs and Richmond. That way, we can agree to disagree, and then let the matter drop. :) ~Leslie --- Original Message --- From: "Shirley" <shirleyb123@worldnet.att.net> > Leslie, I live in Rayville, which is just a few miles from Elkhorn, and > commuted to Grandview (south KC Metro area) for 5 years. 1. Re: [MORAY-CGA] Elkhorn history
    2. You are correct I haven't driven that for awhile but Excelsior is approximately 25 miles from Kansas City and you go on East on Highway 10 and I would say it is about 1/3 the way to Richmond and Richmond is 20 miles from Excelsior. My parents lived in Richmond and use to drive from North Kansas City a lot at that time. I have a picture of my father taken in front of an old salt box type house which was his birthplace in Elkhorn. It was taken just before it was torn down and that was probably in the 30's or 40's.

    3. Elkhorn, MO Elkhorn is in Ray County, which is in the Kansas City metro area. The community is in the Central Standard time zone. The latitude of Elkhorn is 39.309N. The longitude is -94.112W. There was a post office in Elkhorn from 1835-1843. Alexander and Samuel Bogart were early Ray Countians. Samuel, was a Methodist minister. He operated a mercantile establishment in Elkhorn, in the central portion of Ray County. Elkhorn was mentioned in some of the Mormon War Letters wriiten by Capt James Bogart. Quote from a letter: Elkhorn, Oct 23rd 1838 Gen. Atchison, Dear Sir, The Mormons have burnt Gallatin & Millport & have ravaged Daviess County, driven out the citizens, burnt the Post Office, taken all kinds of property from the citizens, have gone into Livingston County & taken the cannon from the citizens there. They have threatened to burn Buncombe & Elkhorn, & have been seen near & on the line between Ray & Caldwell, from consequence of which I have ordered out my company to prevent, if possible, any outrage on the County of Ray, & to range the line between Caldwell & Ray, & await your order & further assistance. I will camp at Fields, 12 miles north of this tonight. I learn that the people of Ray are going to take the law into their own hands & put an end to the Mormon war. In haste your obdt servt James Bogart Frank James (the Jesse James Gang) bought a horse there. By 1895 Elkhorn was not listed on the county map from an Atlas. This was before a major road(now Hwy 10) was constructed between Ex. Springs and Richmond according to the map. 2. Dear Kay, I looked in both history books for Ray County, 1883 and 1973 The 1881 history book only had that at one time it was called Crab Orchard. The history book also states that there is very little known about Elkhorn. There is a picture of a platt for the town of Elkhorn, but it never was developed. There isn't any mention of a mill in Elkhorn in the history book, but of course that doesn't mean that there never was a mill there. The 1973 history books does talk about a store in Elkhorn, but it not longer exists. Elkhorn is on Highway 10 west of Richmond and east of Excelsior Springs. All that is there is a bend in the road as mentioned and some house's and a meat market that is for sale. It is located in Township 52, Range 29, Section 13 in Fishing River Township Lisa Smalley MORAY-CGA List Manager http://www.rootsweb.com/~morcga/ Ray County Genealogical Assn.
