    1. [MORAY-CGA] Julius TOM(B)S, Lucinda HILL, Abigail CONNER
    2. Am researching Julius Tom(b)s. He was living in Ray Co., MO, in 1880 and 1900 (Cennsuses). He married Lucinda HILL there on May 27, 1877. Their children were: Alice (1878), Fannie (1882), Frank (1888), and Frances I. (1891). They lived in Hardin, Crooked River Township. Julius said he was born in Illinois and that his parents were born in N.Y. Is anyone out there related to these people? He had married Abigail CONNER in Carroll Co., MO June 3, 1852. They had a daughter, Laura (1860), and a son, Benjamin (1862).

    2. I have a copy of a deed from Ray Co., MO Book 28, Page 238, dated May 26, 1882. In it, James Hughes, Thomas and Lucinda McGinnis sold a piece of land in Hardin, Ray Co., to my husband's ancestor, Julius Tombs. According to the description, it was close to Olive and Third Streets.

    3. Hi Lisa I wondered if it was still available. Maybe I'll put it on my Christmas list..... I'd love to have it. It's wonderful reading. I was totally enthralled with its every word. It'll have to wait though as I'm not able to do it economically right now. So for now, I'll settle for my far and few between trips to the FHL and read it there, I guess. 1. [MORAY-CGA] "History of Ray County, MO"
    2. Heck
    3. I wanted to share with others the wonderful surprise I experienced at my local FHL yesterday. A while back, a generous volunteer offered to do a lookup in the book "History of Ray County, MO" for me. They came back with the results that my ancestors - David Fletcher, Solomon Fletcher, Goldsmith Fletcher, Jesse Fletcher - were not listed in this book. Well, it has baffled me from the get go - "How can my ancestors not be in that book when they were there at the formation of Ray County, MO?". Yesterday, I discovered a new addition to our local Family History Library. They now have a copy of the book "History of Ray County, MO., Carefully Written and Compiled from the Most Authentic Official and Private Sources, Including a History of its Townships, City, Towns and Villages,......." St. Louis Missouri Historical Company 1881. I went to the back of the book and my ancestors were not listed in the index as the volunteer had stated. But I just refused to believe and just felt in my heart that they were in that book somewhere. I opened the book and started reading and low and behold, I had opened it to a page that mentioned my 3rd g. grandfather David Fletcher. "In March 1818, John, Richard, Samuel, Zachariah, William and Jesse Cleavenger, Isaac Allen, John Hutchings, Lewis, Samuel, and Jacob Tarwater, James Wells, and William R. Blythe (a trapper), settled in Fishing River bottom, in the southwestern part of the county. They, too, were all from middle and east Tennessee. The next year R. Lewis McCoskrie, a native of Bourbon county, Kentucky, settled in the same locality; Captain Jacob Riffe, from Casey County, Kentucky, a little further to the east in township fifty-one, range twenty-eight, and Dorodle Rowland and David Fletcher, on sections three and ten, township fifty-one, range twenty-nine, respectively. They came from Indiana directly; originally from North Carolina. The above settlers all cam to stay, and were sober, industrious, honorable men. Several of them held county and township offices at different times." above quoted from page 209 ------------------------- I then began skimming through a few pages and found on page 221 continued on pg 221 under "First Grand Jury": ...........Wiliam Scott, John Dickson, Daniel Shackelford, Samuel Prewett, William Rawlings, Charles Scott, James R. Walker, Jesse Fletcher, David Bryant, Daniel Duvall, Samuel Oliphant, William Ragen and Hugh Valandingham." So my original hunch was correct. My family may not have made it in the index for what ever reason, but they were included in the book. This incident has motivated me and opened my eyes to the importance of taking the time to read through some of these old books and not just rely on the surname indexes in the back of the books. I'm not able to take the book out of the library but, I plan on spending time reading it every opportunity I can (which isn't that often I get to the library). Jean Heck

    2. Sharon, I couldn't send you a message to your email address. I don't have the info on John Coleman you asked for but have been working around James Lee Tucker family. I have looked on the Orrick census for 1900 & 1910 and didn't find John Coleman listed. Would he have lived in Clay County during that time? I will try and help. Can you give me the children for James & Sarah Tucker. Sarah's brother David married into my Clark family. I have a question. I need some info, if you can help. I have Millie Tarwater, daughter of John Samuel Tarwater who married William Wholf. (married 1872) Millie's father died in 1913 and on his probate Millie is listed as deceased and list her children. Can you help me out on this family? I also need William's parents. Thanks, Joy Caraway

    3. Hi Joy, Thanks so much. Do you have a source? I seem to remember seeing a census record, probably 1880 with what looked like "Edward" in the first name. It was difficult to read, and I thought it might be a misprint, anyway, as the family was sure that his name was Edwin. In fact, two descendants (my wife included) were named after him. Be really interesting if his name isn't Edwin after all! Thanks, Mark "Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less." Robert E. 3. Mark, I am a descendent of Wm. Bales and Elizabeth Adamson and was doing some research on the Bales recently. I copied 24 different Bales marriages from Ray Co. marriage books, but do not have one for Lucy. I have 7 Lucy Bales in my data base. Who are her parents? There are a large number of Bales in Carroll Co as well. Have you checked there? I did not find Carroll Co. marriage books at the Mid-Continent Lib. in Independence MO where I was researching. I have had great luck writing directly to the County and getting copies from them for $1.00 each. Since you know both parties names it will be easier to search.
