I submitted the info to the Knox County, Kentucky list. Never even thought of posting it here. At anyrate, these are all Ray County, Federal Census with added notes of parents spouses relations and so forth. Cassy. RESPONSE: I am going to take Cassy's census postings from 1880, 1900, 1910 & 1920 Missouri and add in some references connecting them back to Knox Co., KY . Thanks again, Cassy, for these census listings. RESPONSE FROM JOYCE: This is Edward/Edmund MESSER b. abt. 1816 in Knox Co.; s/o Moses MESSER and Winnie GoLDEN who it is said had a lst marriage to an Arin WALKER TAYLOR about which I know nothing; married 2nd to Annabelle/Anna/Ann PATTERSON, b. abt. 1815; d. aft. 1880 in Knox Co. and divorced her and starting having babies with and finally married Mary SCALF, b. abt. 1849. Mary SCALF was the dau. of Peter and Charlotte "Lottie" HUBBARD SCALF. She and Edward married 2-23-1871 in Knox Co. On the 1870 Knox Co., Edward is listed with Mary SCALF and some of their children; his children with Ann PATTERSON WALKER MESSER and even Ann herself, along with her dau. from her lst marriage. Anna PATTERSON WALKER MESSER (dau. of John William PATTERSON and a wife, Jincy Jane/Jency UNK.) was married to 'a' John WALKER. We assume he would have been the son of either the old John WALKER mar. to the Lucy UNK. WALKER of Knox Co. or the son of my ggg-grandfather, Walter and Annie UNK. WALKER. In any case, he died by 1833 leaving Anna PATTERSON WALKER with a dau., Elizabeth or poss. Elizabeth Jane. Henry MILLS was the s/o John "Big John" MILLS and Lucretia/Creasy BAKER. In his pension application dated 1915, it is stated that he moved to Pettus co., MO in 1867; to Howard Co., MO in 1870; to Jackson Co., MO in 1872 and finally to Ray Co., MO by 1884. He was married lst to Calvina WOOLUM who d. abt. 1862; he married 2nd May 23, 1866 to Dicie MESSER (dau. of Edward MESSER and Anna PATTERSON WALKER MESSER). It was most interesting to see Jane WALKER listed on the 1900 Ray Co., MO census listing. After their divorce and the move of Edward MESSER and his wife, Mary SCALF, to MO, this Jane is listed as follows on the 1880 Knox Co. I looked at this listing for years before it dawned on me who it must be: Dwelling 421-424 - 1880 Knox Co. - - residing bet. James W. TAYLOR and Allen MESSER , etc. WALKER, Jane, 43, head of household, dau., "divorced", b. KY; father b. KY ; mother b. NC MILLS, Martha A., 10, at home, dau., b. kY; parents b. KY WALKER, Annie, 73, at home, MOTHER, "divorced", b. NC; parents b. NC I finally decided this must be Annie/Anna PATTERSON WALKER MESSER who having been divorced by her husband, Edward MESSER, went back to using her WALKER married name. And that Jane was Elizabeth Jane WALKER listed as her dau. after she married Edward MESSER. And somewhere along the line, I think this Jane WALKER married one of the Nasby MILLS, had Martha A. MILLS and they were divorced and she went back to using the surname, WALKER, also. Apparently somehow and at some point, she made her way to MO and joined her half-sister, Dicy MESSER who married Anthony MILLS. However, it must be noted that Dicy A. MESSER, b. abt. 1842 also had an older sister, Jane MESSER, b. abt. 1835. But, unless she married a WALKER somewhere along the way, I must assume at this point that she is the half-sister of Dicy MESSER. Anthony and Dicy MESSER MILLS are still in Knox Co. as of the 1870 Fed. Census. 257-257 Mills, Anthony, May 1829, 71 M33 (Anthony is the child of John Mills and Lucretia Baker) ..Dicy, Aug 1841, 59 9 children 6 living (Dicy is the child of Edward Messer and Anna Patterson) ..Cornelia, f, July 1878, 21 ..Sally, f, Oct 1883, 16 Walker, Jane Sister-n-Law, Jan 1833, 67, Widow (From Joyce Collins notes regarding the 1880 Census: thanks Joyce :-) this is Elizabeth jane WALKER, only child from the marriage bet. First and foremost I want to thank the many people who responded to me with directions to the cemeteries in Ray County. When I made a short trip through there on Christmas Eve I was able to find all but one Cemetery, the last no one knew where it was. :-( You all made my trip very eventful and I greatly appreciate it. Second. Can someone please if possible do two lookups for me I am trying to find a Cornelius Taylor Warren in either the 1880 or 1900 Ray County Census. Third does anyone know where Martha Warren is buried. She is suppose to have died in 1880 or closely after that. Fourth. For all those who have helped or need help I took many photos while in Ray County of the cemetery stones, mostly Mills family. I have a new web site and anyone who is interested in seeing the photo's or adding to them please email me directly and I will send you an invite. I currently have about 200 tombstone photo's on the page, mostly from Kentucky, but many from other places also. Thank you once again, Cassy. [email protected]

    3. Lena, I have checked the records of Sunny Slope Cemetery and Richmond Cemetery (they are side by side). The records show that Virgle MELLING and his father Ed MELLING are buried in Richmond Cemetery, not Sunny Slope Cemetery. There are a number of MELLINGs buried in Sunny Slope, but the Sunny Slope records do not have Virgle or Ed. Neither cemetery records a burial for Virgle's mother, Mollie MELLING. The tombstone in Richmond Cemetery confirms your death date of Sep 4, 1904 at age 7 yrs, 7 mo, 22 da. and provides the names of his mother and father. I have no idea about finding an obit or other death records if you checked the newspapers published soon after Sep 4, 1904. 2. Try the Ray County Genealogy (or Historical) Association. There is an Alder in Richmond who (I think) is in the insurance business. My ancestor of that name was Willis Dossen Alder and he lived in Rayville. One of his daughters was Amanda Caroline Alder who became my grandmother. 1. [MORAY-CGA] 1930 US Census
    2. It's that time of every ten years again folks. Lisa Smalley MORAY-CGA List Manager http://www.rootsweb.com/~morcga/ Ray County Genealogical Assn. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2002 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - U.S. 1930 Census Records To Be Released The United States government conducts a census every ten years, in the years ending with a zero (1910, 1920, etc.). These census records contain a wealth of information for genealogists. The exact information obtained varies from one census to the next but generally contains each person's name, residence, age, place of birth, immediate family members residing in the same household, and more. The government keeps these records confidential for seventy-two years to protect the privacy of those listed. The 1930 U.S. Census records are due to be released this year. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration has announced that it will release the 1930 Federal population census for the first time on April 1, 2002. At that time, the microfilmed copies will be opened for research at the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, at 13 of the National Archives regional facilities across the nation, and through the National Archives rental program. The 1930 census is the 15th Federal census mandated by the U.S. Constitution, which states, "The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct. . . ". As one would expect, the number of records in the 1930 census is much larger than any previous census. All of the returns for the first U.S. census conducted in 1790 fit onto 12 rolls of microfilm. The country continued to grow so that the 1920 census consists of 2,076 rolls of film. The 1930 census consists of 2,667 rolls of population schedules and 1,587 rolls of Soundex indexes for 12 southern states, totaling 4,254 rolls. The other states, however, do not have Soundex indexes. The 1930 census provides a wealth of socio-economic information, such as the following: names of all persons living in each home; relationship of each person to the head of household; whether the home is owned or rented; value of the home; if the family owns a radio; if they own a farm; whether they attended school or college; if they can read or write; place of birth; citizenship status; and occupation. These census records should be available within a few days after April 1, 2002 via the National Archives' Rental Program. In addition, commercial companies will also have rolls of microfilm available for sale or for rent. I suspect that CD-ROM and possible online availability will occur some later time after April 1, 2002. For more information on the 1930 census, see http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/1930cen.html/
