Thanks, Carol, and being blunt is fine....because there are still idiots in this world....I just misunderstood...as I thought you had said she was hired prior to the flood....but it certainly makes sense to protect the remains and the cemetery from idiots. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Proffitt" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2002 8:47 AM Subject: [MORAY-CGA] Hardin cemetery > To be blunt she and several others were hired to prevent stealing from the graves. > Carol Proffitt > > > ==== MORAY-CGA Mailing List ==== > Ray County Historical Society, PO Box 2, Richmond, MO 64085 > >

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the availability of aerial photos on the web, I suggest you visit http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/default.asp If you are looking for a photo of the Hardin Cemetery, post flood, click on Advanced Find. Click on address search. Enter the city, Hardin, and the state, MO. You will get this result: 1 - Hardin, Missouri USGS Aerial Photograph 15 Mar 1996 USGS Topo Map 1 Jul 1980 Click on the 1996 photo choice. Once there, you can follow the screen prompts to explore the area. Or you can go directly to this link to see the cemetery. http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=11&T=1&X=1073&Y=10866&Z=15&W=0 Once there you can zoom in to various parts of the cemetery for closer looks. http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=10&T=1&X=2147&Y=21733&Z=15&W=0 The next link shows the large "blew hole" dividing the cemetery. All the graves that were in this area were washed away. http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=10&T=1&X=2147&Y=21732&Z=15&W=0 One report is quoted below: "During the Midwest Floods of 1993, members of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association Disaster Response Team stepped in to help the National Guard retrieve and identify burial vaults that had been disturbed by flood waters and cemetery erosion. Especially hard hit was the Hardin Cemetery in Ray County, Missouri, where 550 graves had been uncovered. Many of the vaults were spotted nearby floating in the flood waters. One was even recovered thirteen miles from the cemetery! " Read more about blew holes here. http://www.amrivers.org/therivermonitor/blewholes.htm

I was glad to hear the cemetery was censused just prior to the flood...but don't quite understand the part about FEMA hiring someone to watch who went to the cemetery....can you elaborate on that part? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol Proffitt" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2002 6:44 PM Subject: [MORAY-CGA] Hardin cemetery > My daughter was hired through FEMA in 1993 to watch the entrance of the cemetery and watch who entered there. Only a part of the cemetery was washed away in the flood. I was there a couple of years ago as I have family buried there. They(?) have put up a beautiful large plaque right at the entrance of the Cemetery that lists all of the names of the people who's remains, etc. got out. Perhaps someone in the area could take a photo of it for you?? Was that my Uncle Millard Adams? He is a nice man and my husbands uncle. We also have family buried there. A big section of the Hardin cemetery was washed away....they have a plaque with the names of the graves lost....two of mine were gone. I have a photo of one of the gravestones that was not found....probably down to bedrock and 5 miles away.....anyway, they did recover a few and they are standing in a few rows to one side. Best to write the Hardin cemetery and ask about your specific name. Could be it was not in the area destroyed.
