Skimming the recent posts, the name kept niggling at me as familiar, so I finally looked in my records to see who W.H. Martin was, then reread the posts and noticed the apparent marriage discrepancy. As was so common in that era, he was named after someone famous - in this case Wade Hampton, the Confederate officer, SC governor, & Senator. I'm sure there are a number of Wade Hampton Whomevers scattered across the U.S. in the decades following the Civil War. This also brings to mind my aunt's grandfather, Sterling Price Martin, of course named after Confederate general Sterling Price. Am leaving on vacation Monday, but will keep all this in mind and post anything I run across.

"Sarah (Tarwater) O'Dell was my mother-in-law and I knew her well. Her 2nd marriage was to Wade Hampton Martin of the Union Church neighborhood about 5 miles northwest of Orrick on June 5, 1864. His mother, Sarah (Tarwater) O'Dell, lived there and was then married to Wade Hampton Martin. That was the first time I met my mother-in-law..."" Is this the same Wade Hampton Martin? From Grandma Lou's account, it would seem he and Sarah married in '64 and were still married in '97. In light of this, I don't understand the marriage of Wade Hampton Martin to Mary Sutton 12 Oct 1875. Can you shed some light?

I have no further information on Murdock Martin or his origins. It may be of interest to note that Murdock's daughter Mary Jane Martin married a John Odle or O'dell. I do not have a date/location, could you check for them in your Ray County marriage book? This Martin line is a large "brick wall" and would love to find a clue to break it down. Have been researching census records and thought the following might be of interest to you if you do not already have the information: 1840 Ray County Missouri Thomas Martin, Crooked River Twp, p. 335, 13321-000001 Thomas B. Martin, Fishing River Twp, p. 329 10001-001 (Thomas & Martha w/ Hampton?) David Martin, Fishing River Twp, p. 329 0000001-0110001 (same page as Thomas B.) William Martin, Richmond Twp, p.318 00101001-00000001 No other Martins in Ray County. By 1850 Murdock Martin's widow is residing in Fishing River Twp, Ray County, MO with her parents (Titus), the Martin children, and her new husband and son. [The Titus family moved to Ray Co. in 1842 (same year Mary Jane born), Martin family could have been there before that or perhaps he was from Ray County prior to his marriage.] The closest Martin to this family is a William Martin (10 houses away)age 25 born in IN. Have not began researching him yet, but am hopeful of a relation due to the proximity. Murdock's widow's family is on p. 378, William Martin p. 379 and a related family on p. 380. There are several O'Dell families on these pages as well. Sharon, do you have any additional information on Thomas' father John Taylor? Would be very interested if there's any possibility of Murdock belonging to that family or if William b. c1825 in IN connects, please let me know.

Thomas & Martha's daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Martin md William Hersel Minick July 17, 1862. They were my gggrandparents. William supposedly left home at the age of 12 after an argument with his father. He joined a wagon train and I have not been able to trace him until his marriage to Betsy. I have a copy of Thomas Martin's will naming his wife Martha and 2 sisters, Hiley Palmyra Robins (I have not been able to locate a marriage between Hiley Martin and a Mr. Robins) and Mary Amanda Martin. He left sections of his property to both sisters. The will does not list any of the Martin children, Wade Hampton, William, Walter, Mary Elizabeth, Martha or Hiley. I assume he provided well enough for Martha to take care of their children. I also have the 1850 Ray Cty. census listing Willis & Ma! rtha. I found Martha Greenlee, age 47, in the 1870 census but Willis was not listed. She remarried Nicholas Wibey in Ray County on July 7, 1872. Martha Creason's parentage is still in question. I have lots of info on the Creasons but cannot seem to confirm anything. Several people have said her father was Walter, but others disagree. Would love to compare notes with you.
