This looks like a rather mangled version of the 1851 census. It's much clearer on FreeCen http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl which lists Ann Margach, aged 67; Ann Margach, daughter of Mrs Margach, aged 24; William Margach, son, aged 16, and three lodgers including William Innes, aged 25. This could be the family of Peter Margach and Ann Mclean, who were married in Knockando on 21 September 1821 and who had the following children Marjory, born 11 and baptised 29 May 1823 Ann, born 7 April and baptised 9 May 1825 Jane, born 10 and baptised 25 August 1827 Peter, born 28 July and baptised 4 August 1829 Isabel, born 1 and baptised 13 August 1831 William, born 11 October and baptised 8 NOvember 1833 Ann Sr, Ann Jr and William are listed in South Street, Elgin in the 1841 census, with John, George and James McLean, whose ages match those of the three sons of John Maclean and Elizabeth Gordon, married 8 August 1822 in Knockando John, born 11 and baptised 14 February 1824 George Gordon, born 13 and baptised 26 March 1828 James, born 9 and baptised 25 May 1830 So we have Ann Maclean married in Knockando in 1821, John Maclean married in Knockando in 1822, and the latter's children living with the former in 1841. Peter Margach seems to have vanished from the scene some time between 1833 (when his son William was born) and the 1841 census. LIBINDX at http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp lists the death of Peter Margach, cabinetmaker, on 25 April 1835 in Elgin, aged 44, suggesting that he was born in 1790/1. He is buried in Knockando. In the same grave is his wife Ann McLean died on 17 August 1855. You are really in luck, because an 1855 death certificate is a real goldmine of information. Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, invest in a few credits, and download the image of the death certificate. It should tell you the names of Ann' parents, and the names and ages of her children and whether they are still living. In the next grave are their children Peter, Isabella and Jane, who all died in infancy or early childhood. Also in Knockando is the grave of Peter Margach and his wife Marjory Grant, whose family included Peter, baptised 5 May 1790. Note that Peter Margach and Ann Maclean's first daughter was named Marjory. So I think it likely that the Peter Margach who married Ann Maclean is the son of Peter Margach and Marjory Grant. So, Ann Margach, daughter of Peter Margach and Ann Maclean is the aunt of William Innes Margach. Is this anything to do with the William Innes who was living in the household in 1851? He looks like the son of James Innes and Janet Mcintosh, born 14 and baptised 25 May 1825, so there's no obvious connection. Anyway William Innes Margach is therefore presumably the son of William Margach, born 1833, since his only brother Peter died in infancy? Or was he an illegitimate child of sister Marjory, the only other sibling not listed on the gravestone? Was she the one who married Alexander Christie and had a son Alexander, born 5 July 1844 in Knockando? I note that there is a 16-year-old Alexander Christie in the household of William and Ann Innes in the 1861 census, and LIBINDX says that the other Marjory Margach, born in Elgin in 1824, married John Grant. I see that a William Innes married an Ann Margach in Elgin on 13 June 1851. If you had the full content of the 1861 census, would it tell you that this William Innes, Ann Margach's husband, is the one who was a lodger in Ann's mother's house in 1851? I suspect that it would. You can get the image of the original at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk So I speculate that William Margach, son of Peter Margach and Ann Maclean, named a son after his brother-in-law William Innes. William was born in 1833, so we are looking for a William Margach, born say 1855-1880, who was registered simply as William, but acquired the middle name later, which is quite common. I see that a William Margach married a Helen Gray in Elgin on 2 March 1857. The image of that marriage certificate from Scotland's People will confirm whether this is William son of Peter Margach and Ann Maclean. However the IGI lists no children of this couple, and I have yet to find William in the 1881 census. Why not have a look at the various certificates and census highlighted above, see if I am right, and get back to us so we can puzzle out a bit more of this.
