Hallforest is a farm a milr or so southwest of Kintore village. You can find it by going to www.streetmap.co.uk and using the 'GB place' search. There is also a patch of woodland called Hall Forest about half a mile north-north-west from Hallforest Farm. The 1881 census lists 9 households at Hall Forest and one at Hallforest Toll, but none is specifically named Old Hall Forest. I thought that they might be Cottown and Upper Cottown, which are marked on both the current map and the 1869 map (online at www.old-maps.co.uk but not easy to use), but these are in the 1881 census, in the next enumeration district so it's not them. If you look at Hall Forest on the map, you will see a road just north of it with a string of houses along it, and the name Burgh Muir above it. There are no listings of households named Burgh Muir or Burghmuir in Kintore in 1881, but the order of place listings in the census is .... Womblehill (mistranscribed Nomblehill on the CR-ROM), Torryburn, Gauch Hill (mistranscribed Gauch Hill), Fordtown, Castle, Hall Forest, Thoms Forest, Rach-Hill .... Looking on the map, it would make sense if the enumerator had wallked from the Castle, along that row of houses, and then to Tom's Forest, so I think that these houses are probably the ones listed as Hall Forest in the 1881 census. As to which is Old Hallforest, I don't know. It could be what is marked on the maps as Hallforest, but listed in the census as Castle. Where was your person in the 1881 census? Anne

    3. Hi Pearl, I live in that area, I've walked my dogs through Hallforest, Hall Forest and Tom's Forrest!! I suspect that Old Hall Forest is nearest to the Castle(which is now a ruin), although I've never heard it referred to as that. The name would have referred to an area. Many of the houses on the present day map would not have been there in 1882, in fact, very few of them were even there 50 years ago. If you could give me the name of the person you're researching, I might be able to help.
