A lot of times, they go by their middle name, because sometimes their father was named the same. My grandfather was baptised Albert John ARTER. But, in Canada, he is only known by John Albert ARTER. If I didn't know this, I would never have found him on the Census in England. So, this could possibly be the explaination. Nicknames are also used, but I mostly see the middle name used.
