I have an ancestor that left Scotland and settled in what is now, Miramichi, Northumberland County, New Brunswick. His name was Robert ENGLAND. I am trying to determine where in Scotland he came from and when he came across the pond. To complicate things, New Brunswick separated from Nova Scotia. The date of separation was January 1784. The earliest record that I found on my Robert ENGLAND in the NB archives is in a land grant application dated March 1784. ( He did receive the grant). In the grant application it states that Robert England had built a house on the property. This tells me that he arrived in the area in or before 1783. Are there any records in the NS archives, I do not know? I am unable to make the 4 1/2 hour trip due to health problems. My research to find Robert England in Scotland points to a possible match of one "Robert England", b 6 Nov, 1756, Rothes, County of Moray, Scotland, s/o Robert England and Agnes Garioch. The time frame is right. Also I have not found a marriage for this Robert, nor have I been able to trace him. My question is: Is there a website that lists the ships that left Scotland for (then Nova Scotia) Canada between about 1780 and 1783? Did any of these ships carry passengers and if so, are there passenger lists? Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jim Dixon Canada
Jim ... Although I didn't find any passenger lists ... I have found a few interesting sites. They all refer to a Robert England and Lot 31. Here is a Robert England's marriage, death and children information on a Sweezey family site ... THE FIRST TWO SWEEZEY GENERATIONS IN MIRAMICHI http://www.genealogy.com/users/b/a/r/Karly-A-Barber/FILE/0016page.html Nov. 10 1791 Robert England of Scotland and Marjory Brown are married by Justice James Fraser in the Court of Quarter Sessions. They live on lot 31, Chatham, at what is today a park known as “England’s Hollow”. 1795 Robert England is appointed an overseer of the fishery for both sides of the river from Beaubears Island to Terril’s Point. 1796 Robert England and Marjory England have a daughter, Annie. 18 Aug. 1813 Reuben (Sweezey) buys lot 27 at Chatham on the south side of the Miramichi River, which is opposite the present-day entrance to Middle Island. Robert England, at lot 31, Chatham, is his close neighbour and witnesses the sale. This is probably when Reuben meets his future wife Annie England, daughter of Robert. 1835 Robert England dies and his sons Robert and his wife Fanny, cooper, Alexander, farmer and his wife Ann, Ruben Sweezey and his wife, farmers, George England, carpenter and James England blacksmith and Marjery England, Robert’s widow, sell Robert England’s various lands to his other son John, for five shillings each (..!?) According to his will, Robert England lived on lot 31 at Chatham until his death and at the time of his death Ruben Sweezey was living at Nappan Bay, where the Sweezey descendants still live. Both Annie Sweezey nee England and her mother Marjory Sweezey nee Brown, the widow, sign with their mark, not their names. 30 July 1836 Robert James born to Reuben and Annie (England). They are reported as living in Glenelg parish and are farmers. _______________________________________________________________________ You may be aware of the following information posted on the Internet referring to a survey ... http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/charlotte_taylor/Folder1/Miramichi%20River%20Lot s.htm Miramichi River Lots Daniel Micheau Survey 1785 Open the small picture at the top left of the page .. It's a copy of the original drawing. Robert England is Lot No. 31 http://www3.bc.sympatico.ca/charlotte_taylor/Folder1/Pre_Loyalists_on_the_Mi ramichi.htm This article states ... No. 31 A House Building by Robert England, lately from Europe The original ( Survey Map of 1785 by Daniel Micheau of the Miramichi River below Beaubear's Island, down to the Bay ) is preserved in the Crown Land Office at Fredericton … it was made in April, 1785, by a skilled surveyor, Daniel Micheau, and contains, in addition to the usual surveyor's return, a series of very valuable notes written around the margin, … The settlements of the lower Miramichi were then forming and the information about the derivation of the settlers is most welcome. It will be noticed that while some of them were Loyalists, many were 'old settlers', who are known to have come from Scotland or England. ------------------------------- Your Robert England Lot 31 is also mentioned in the Royal Gazette .. I used 'edit' 'find' 'england' ... these notes are near the end of the article http://www.gnb.ca/0062/gazette/RG20051221.pdf " Then northerly following said sideline until it intersects the southern boundary of Lot 31, originally granted to Robert England. Then starting easterly and following the eastern boundary of said lot to the Miramichi River, New Brunswick Grant Reference Plan No. 61;" I hope the above information is of some help to you ....
