> My Gt. Grandfather John STEWART died in 1904 at a hospital in > Elgin - looks > like Gray's. Dr Gray's Hospital is the general hospital in Elgin. It was founded in 1815. > Libindx gives a headstone reference but no cemetery is named. The reference is NE(E)239 which refers to New Elgin East Cemetery. Apart from the old Cathedral burial ground, this is the only cemetery in Elgin, and it is divided into North, South, East and West divisions. > A headstone reference - is this a definite stone or likely to > be the lair > number? It is a headstone. You can search for other people mentioned on the headstone by putting just the headstone reference in the search screen. In this case, however, no-one else is apparently mentioned on the stone. > I have been shown in the past the location of an ancestor's > grave, but no > stone, in Leith. Yes, that's quite common. > I had hoped that all John's wives would be mentioned on his > death > certificate but only my Gt. Grandmother is mentioned, Robina > McLEOD. Then again, why > would anyone particularly want to mention previous wives, > unless, I suppose, > they were the offspring of one of the earlier wives? It's not a case of 'wanting'. The rules say that a death certificate should list the names of all the spouses of an individual. But this would depend on the informant knowing the names of all the previous spouses, which may not be the case. HTH Anne
