> I am looking for a DUNCAN family. I'm not sure it's > Banffshire, but I have an William DUNCAN > married to Ann INNES in Keith, BA, 26 Nov 1863. On the > marriage registration it shows his > Father as Alexander DUNCAN and mother Elspet KEITH, William > is given as a widower, age > 47, but it maybe 49. (unclear) So he was allegedly born in 1814-1816 approximately. The IGI has a William Duncan, son of Alexander Duncan and Elspet Keith, born 23 May 1808 and baptised in Grange on 4 June 1808. This is 'extracted' so should be reasonably reliable. > On the death registration 1888, March 13th; it shows a Wm > Duncan as father (deceased) and > mother as Elspet Duncan ms KEITH (deceased). The informant is > ELSIE DUNCAN, daughter, > ( present). Looks as if Elsie may not have known her grandfather's given name, or either she or the Registrar made a mistake. > Somehow, this Innes family is involved in Bellie, Moray. > Ann and her sister Margaret (married Alexr. Gordon 1849, > Bellie) and both lived there for a short > time and show on > census info there. Both girls are born in Rathven, and their > parents moved > from there to Keith, BA. Is it possible that they were born in the Enzie, which was sometimes listed partly as being in Rathven and sometimes in Bellie? If so, might they have been Roman Catholic? There was a RC baptism of an Ann to Joseph Innes and Marjory Cameron in 1814. On the other hand, their daughter Margaret, born 1811, died in 1821 ... but then again, the 1881 census says that the widowed Margaret Gordon, born Rathven, was aged 58, so born 1822-23. LIBINDX says that there is a stone in Keith old Kirkyard commemorating Alexander Gordon, feuar in Keith, died 8 April 1872, his wife Margaret Innes, died 2 November 1902, George Craigen, died at Gordonstoun and his mother Ann Innes, died 10 June 1895. Another entry in LIBINDX says that Ann Duncan, born Rathven, mother of George Craigen, applied to Keith Parochial Board in 1893. The1881 census lists Ann Duncan, wife of William Duncan, 65, born Keith, as aged 64 and born in Keith. A George Craigen, aged 25, born Keith is listed in Gamrie with wife Maggie and daughter Maggie Gordon Craigen. The 1861 census lists at Square, Keith, Anne Innes, 43, born Rathven and George Craigon, son, aged 6, born Keith. It also lists William Duncan, 45, born Grange with wife Ann, 36,born Botriphnie and children Elspet, 8; William, 6, John, 3 and Ann, 1. This wife Ann is Ann McRobert. who married William Duncan in Keith on 15 November 1851. [Department of red herrings: the 1881 lists a James Duncan with wife Ann, aged 63, born Rathven. However the 1861 makes it clear that she is Ann Burnet, though it says she was born in Keith!] Have you got the death certificates of Ann and/or Margaret? Do they shed any light? > I just can't make the connection. Not sure which connection you are trying to make? Anne
