Gordon Estates, including the Castle, were transferred to the Crown in lieu of death duties in about 1929 or so. The Gordon-Lennox family bought back the Castle itself and some of the surrounding land, but most of the land remained Crown land. However the general point, that estate papers before 1929 are the property of the Dukes of Richmond and Gordon, still applies. The transfer of the estate from the family to the Crown makes it even more natural that any archives would have been either moved to Goodwood or otherwise disposed of. Anne
