> Does anyone have access to the OPRs and could take a look for > me re: > death of James and Charlotte or births of Robert and Margaret > DONALD? Barbara, if there is no listing in the index at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and no listing on the IGI for these baptisms, this means that they are not in the OPRs to start with. The deaths in the Elgin Parish Register have been indexed and are online in http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp but there is no mention of James Donald or Charlotte Mackenzie. Even if there were, it is unlikely that they would tell you anything you don't already know as they normally give only the name, husband's name (for a married woman) and date of death. In particular the burial record of an adult does not tell you who the person's parents were. There are no deaths or burials in the St Andrews-Lhanbryd parish register. See http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/hlpsrch/opr-cov.html All the extant legible gravestones in Moray were surveyed and recorded in 1978-9, and these are indexed on LIBINDX too. Again, there is nothing on James and Charlotte. I have a copy of the 1882 edition of Lachlan Shaw's 'History of the Province of Moray' and have checked the parts referring to St Andrews (Shaw himself died in 1777 and the 1882 edition was reworked and greatly extended by J FS Gordon) and there is no mention of schoolmasters, though there are lists of parish ministers including of course William Leslie of Balnageith, who was minister of St Andrews-Lhanbryd for a few weeks short of 60 years, 1779-1839, and would certainly have known James Donald. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The only possible avenue I can think of is that it is just possible that the St Andrews-Lhanbryd Kirk Session minutes might contain some information about James Donald, for example it may record his appointment. These are in the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh, catalogue reference CH2/317. You would need to get someone to go there for you, as they are not (yet) available online. Anne
Anne, Thank you AGAIN for the additional information. I took your advice from your previous reply and was able to find the marriage record. It gave me another clue...a connection to Alvah, so that is another avenue for me to pursue. As information, the 1806 St Nicholas marriage OPR reads: Mr. Jas. Donald School Master in Abdn & Charlotte McKinzie in Abdn of the Decd John (word "late" inserted) McKinzie School Master in Parish of Alvah ?: for both parties Willm Gordon Stationer in Sabbath of Tunsday or Tursday. Thanks again for all your help Anne..much appreciated! -Barbara Anne Burgess wrote: >> Does anyone have access to the OPRs and could take a look for >> me re: >> death of James and Charlotte or births of Robert and Margaret >> DONALD? >> > > Barbara, if there is no listing in the index at > www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and no listing on the IGI for these > baptisms, this means that they are not in the OPRs to start > with. > > The deaths in the Elgin Parish Register have been indexed and > are online in http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp but there > is no mention of James Donald or Charlotte Mackenzie.
