The James Grant that your T.J.C. Stuart stayed with would have been an uncle... he was also a brother to my husband's gr-grandfather Peter Grant b.1834, who married Helen Gordon of Tullochallum, a farm in Dufftown. They had 4 boys and in 1872 the family emigrated to Canada where Peter worked as a surveyor on the railways. I have a fair bit of info on both the Grant & Gordon families as Alex's grandfather wrote their histories and would be willing to share.
