I can help to narrow the dates down a bit. Alexander Mackinnon Burgess was in Portsoy in the 1871 census, and is said to have arrived in Canada later that same year. He went to work for the Toronto 'Globe' and attended sessions of Parliament as a reporter from 1872 onwards. Anne
