There was an attempt made to popularise the use of M' as a substitute for Mac and Mc.I have a copy of "The History of Fordyce Academy" published by the Banffshire Journal in 1936. In the list of pupils they have used M' extensively although not exclusively. The author of the book styles himself D.G.M'Lean. There is only one MacConnachie, a teacher from Hill of Chattie,Portsoy. My Granny's ancestors were McConnachie from Keith. Anything is possible in genealogical spelling. The kirk register of Fordyce has many of my ancestors shown as McGummery although on the gravestones their name is spelled Montgomery. The Ontario records are just as bad.My wife's Helson ancestors are recorded as Elson,Alson,Als and even Nelson. Most of the information was given orally and nothing was given back in written form.It is only in recent years that we have had to carry around bits of paper with our names on them.Good luck, Harry in Agincourt.
Hi Harry, < My Granny's ancestors were McConnachie from Keith. > You will find McConnachies from Keith in the new libindx website which has kept me busy over a wet Easter. http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp By the way if you do try it click on to the magnifying glass which sometimes adds a bit more information in the presentation. I am trying to expand how some McC's from Glen of Newmill, Keith came down to Newcastle upon Tyne and whether Barbara McConachie who married George Christie is relevant to my research. Thanks for your reply, Cheers, Ian ----- Original Message ----- From: "Harry Montgomery" <harmont@allstream.net> To: <MORAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 25, 2005 4:15 PM Subject: Re: [MORAY] Re: Mc Connachie spelling? > There was an attempt made to popularise the use of M' as a substitute for > Mac and Mc.I have a copy of "The History of Fordyce Academy" published by > the Banffshire Journal in 1936.
