William, I am an avid user of scotlandspeople and it has been a very good experience. I find that most everything is available freely on the IGI (but they did miss a few!) I do not have much time as I have a day job and find scotlandspeople more convenient. I will say, living in the USA, I have had a very good experience with it. To everyone on this list, I am visiting the Highlands in May. I plan to hit as many cemeteries as I can find in the area, Nairn / Inverness. I can not promise much as I have never been to Scotland and do not know what I will find there, but I would be more than happy to provide photos of the MI's of the cemeteries that are in the area. I guess it is better than nothing, but to me it is incredibly expensive, and there are only 3 (I think) census years on it. When I compare it to ancestry.com, it retards research so much in comparison. I can sit and page through 150 pages of the entire Brooklyn, New York 1850 census in one evening on ancestry.com -- that's the original images I'm talking about. I can review the whole neighborhood. Then I can jump to any of the other years, or nearby areas, or quickly peruse the whole state for a certain name, and quickly look at the originals for those records. All this for $100 a year. I can spend hours reading the census every night if I want to. And I do spend a lot of time on it, it probably comes out to pennies per image. And there are some Canadian and UK censuses on it also. The contrast with Scotland's People is huge. I hope someday ancestry.com will get the Scottish censuses, or is it an issue that the government will not release them to private companies? And many people are doing a wonderful job getting some of them up for free, if they still need help when I retire I would like to help with that.
