Hi, Many thanks and congratulations to all involved in Libindx. This is a terrific resource which has already provided me with lots of information. In particular, I have several Headstone references which I would like to follow up, namely, U81, U82 and Ro482. Can anyone advise me where I can view a full transcription of these headstones? Is there an MI publication for these cemeteries i.e.. Urquhart and Rothes? While searching Libindx, I have come across many entries for which I have substantial additional information and I'm sure this applies to many people. I realise that any details would have to be double-checked, but is there a procedure for submitting these for inclusion on the database? Thanks, Ian Cameron
Hi Ian; I have Rothes cemetery in a book of MIs but not Urquart. The number 482 isn't relevant, however. If you give me the name you are looking for I can supply that entry for you. My Grandfather, William MACPHERSON, worked on the railway in Elgin from 1895 until 1902. In about 1900 he was promoted and went to live in Aberdeen, he work mainly between Aberdeen and Elgin. Does anyone have any idea if he would have worked for the Highland Railway or the Great North Railway? Where can I find more information about the Railways in Elgin? As well as find out more information about my Grandfather's employment by the railway from 1895-1902? Whichever railway he worked for, had a branch line, at that time to Lossiemouth. He was able to travel there either free or at a very reduced cost on his day off and annual holiday week. He used to describe the wonderful times he and his friends had at Lossiemouth. This was where he first learned to "body surf" in the sea! There were also rowing boats. My Grandfather told many wonderful tales of the time when he worked on the railway. He left school at the age of 14 in 1895 and got his very first 3 piece suit ( jacket, waistcoat and trousers), which cost the huge amount of 1 Guinea ( 1GB Pound and 1 shilling) for his first job on the railway. This suit was hemmed up in the arms and legs and sides so that he could grow into it!!!! He used to proudly announce that this was his second best suit when he went to South Africa in 1902. I remember many of his stories of life in Elgin in the 1890's but am very short on verifiable facts. Any information would be welcomed. Colleen Canada
Colleen, from your description, he definitely worked for the Great North of Scotland Railway. They had the branch to Lossiemouth, and had two routes from Aberdeen to Elgin, whereas the Highland only got as far as Keith from Inverness. The Great North of Scotland Railway Association: http://www.griffon.clara.net/gnsra/ The Highland Railway Society: http://www.hrsoc.org.uk/ Also definitely worth a look for anyone wanting to get a background in their local area's railway history: http://www.railscot.co.uk (for you, Colleen, aim for the Morayshire Railway re Lossiemouth).
