Ray Re: My ancestor, James Grant The inscription on James Grant's tombstone reads: "Sacred to the memory of James Grant Native of Knockando, in the shire of Elgin, 21 years as Gardner at Southill Died February 18 1830, Aged 69 years.[Southill, Bedfordshire, England] From this information, I am assuming he was born in 1761, in Knockando, Elgin shire, Scotland. What records should I search to find his birth date and place and his parents? I would appreciate any help I can receive. Ruth Hair Filbert Kansas, USA
Hi Ruth My family also has Grants from Knockando: Peter Grant (ca 1795-?) m Ann Dunbar (ca 1795-?), married 23 May 1815 at Knockando. Children (all born at Knockando) John (b 1816), William (1818), Jane (1819), Peter Alexander (1821), Marion Margaret (1823), Barbara (1827). I wouldn't think that there were too many people living in Knockando and so there probably is some sort of link here.
