    1. Surnames in Morayshire
    2. I am searching for James and Isabella (Spence) Grant. James parents were Lewis & Jane Grant. James was born 1813 in Morayshire, he and Isabella were married in 1835/6. They departed from Glasgow in 1851 on board the American Lass arriving Oct 1851 in New York. The manifest shows James/Isabella, 5 children and also a William Grant (age 28), occupation: Mason. James son William married my gg aunt MaryEllen Gibbs in Ada, Kent County MI approx 1869. William was a member of the 1st NY (Lincoln) Calvary during the Civil War (this unit was formed here in Grand Rapids MI). He went in as a Private and came out in 1865 as an Artificer. I do not know much about their lives in Scotland and would like to learn more.

Well, I have been having a look for your Grants. Speymouth Parish Register: "James Grant and Isabel Spence both residing in this parish were married on the 2nd of May 1836." Elgin Parish Register: "Anno 1836, October 18th. James Grant labourer in Elgin and Isabella Spence his spouse had a daughter (born 25th September ) baptized by the Reverend Alexander Walker named Emilia. Witnesses James Anderson and Agnes Anderson." "Anno 1841, February 28th. James Grant labourer in Elgin and Isabella Spence his spouse had a daughter (born 18th February 1841) baptized by the Reverend Alexander Topp named Isabella. Witnesses Robert Monro and Jessie Hay." "Anno 1844, April 30th. James Grant labourer in Elgin and Isabella Spence his spouse had a son (born 29th March 1844) baptized by the Reverend Alexander Topp named John. Witnesses James Miller and Isabella Russell." Rothes Parish Register: "1839. William lawful son to James Grant in the village and his spouse Isabella Spence was born 7th January and baptized 9th February. Witnesses William Mackie Green Street and William Spence the child's uncle parish of Forres." I couldnot find the family in the CD-Rom index to the 1851 census of Elgin, so I imagine that they may already have gone to Glasgow. The Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/ has a CD-Rom index to the 1851 census of Lanarkshire. Hope this helps. Anne
