Hello William, I have checked the 1861 census for Mortlach for your John Innes and can tell you that he nor any other Innes family were residing at Soccach on the night in question. I then checked the 1851 and 1861 census for Aberlour and he his not recorded their either. One place that you may like to check is the 1861 census for Botriphnie as i find in my database that there was an Elizabeth Primrose Innes nee McKenzie who died in Soccach on November 16, 1898, she was the wife of a William Innes who was born c. 1821 in Botriphnie and this family were living in Mortlach at the time of the 1861 census, it may just be that this William was the brother or some other close relative of your John.
