Hi everyone. Ever so often, in some of my ancestors birth and marriage extracts, the name SLUGGAN keeps coming up. My ancestor, William Innes b: about 1778, did live there with his wife Janet Cameron. Actually, their daughter Margaret, 2nd born , was born in Sluggan. I believe this place, in the early 1800’s was in Inveravon, ( Glenlivet ). Does anyone know exactly where it is located? William in Montreal
Hi ... Sluggan is on this map. I believe to be Inverness-Shire. http://uke.multimap.com/gb/A21851.htm To the left of Carrbridge .. about the middle of the map. Click on the map to zoom in closer if needed. There is indeed a Sluggan near Carr Bridge, in the parish of Duthil, county of Inverness. However it is not the one from which William's ancestors came. The latter is in Glenlivet in the parish of Inveravon, county of Banff, and it is not listed on the map used by Streetmap. It is never safe to assume that a place on a map is the only place by that name. Just to quote a few, try looking on Streetmap for Calgary, Dallas, Moscow or Houston! Another one which causes confusion is Kirkmichael. There are no less than four parishes of this name in Scotland (one each in Banffshire, Perthshire, Ayrshire and Dumfries-shire). At the risk of being a bore (because I have said this before), if you are looking for a place in Scotland, it is essential to say where you got the information, and in particular which county and/or which parish you think it is in.
