I have contacted the Scotland Police Archives and was given the information below via email from the lady there on Alexander McKenzie: Email One "Thank you for your e-mail and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I've searched the index of police personnel records and have found one Alexander MacKenzie who was born c.1857 in Langside, Aberdeen. He joined the Glasgow police force in 1876, age 19 (ref SR22/55/9 No.144)." Email Two "The record doesn't give details of parents or spouses names, but I have looked at the application and I'm not sure if it is the right one. The following information may mean more to you than me: Previous trade is described as 'Lunatic Attendant' Appointed constable 5 September 1876 Dismissed from the service 4 June 1877 He is described as single with no children He is resident at 30 John Knox St. The information below is on his Marriage certificate to Penuel Smith: Marriage Registration: Groom: Alexander MacKenzie, 21 yrs, bachelor, police constable Groom's Address: 61 Duke St, Glasgow Groom's Father: James Mackenzie, gamekeeper Groom's Mother: Jessie Mackenzie, m.s. Ferguson Bride: Penuel Smith, 22 yrs, spinster, asylum attendant Bride's Address: Pluscarden, Elgin Bride's Father: John Smith, farmer Bride's Mother: Mary Smith, m.s. Russell Date & Place: March 23, 1877 at 70 Bell Street, Glasgow, by declaration in *can't read* of Alexander Allan Andrew, Lieutenant of Police and William Fairbairn Russell, Commission Merchant. Warrant of Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire, dated Mary 23, 1877 Registered: February 21, 1878 at Glasgow Note added: In respect of the non-attendance of the parties their names (bride & groom) have been inserted in Column 2 by the registrar I am still at a loss as to what happened to Alexander Mackenzie. You advised me in previous postings that Penuel Smith had in 1877 an Application for Poor relief to parish of Elgin - MF D EL4 (GRC archives - ZPEL A5/6 p148 no337b). I also have confirmed that the Penuel Smith that came to Australia in 1878 is in fact the same person who remarried in 1880 here in Australia. I tried to find a birth certificate in Scotspeople but there were so many Elizabeth Mackenzie's that after trying 4 I ran out of credit. So I will try again after Xmas to look for more. If the Alexander McKenzie in the 1881 Census listed as under gamekeeper is the same one then I can only assume they separated or something and Penuel left for Australia. I dont know where else to try to find any information out as I am a dead end here. On all things I have found so far none of the ages for Alexander are the same, it is like he changed it to suit things even though it only varies a couple of years. Any help would be great.
