Divorce wasn't an option at all until the middle of the 19th century unless you could afford to get an Act of Parliament dissolving your marriage. Many, but by no means all, births of illegitimate children generated entries in the minutes of the Kirk Session. Most of the surviving Kirk Session records are in the National Archives of Scotland (www.nas.gov.uk - but it seems to be having a Christmas holiday, all that comes up is a page saying "Coming back soon".
