Hi, I have been trying for some months to solve the identity of William M. GRANT who in the 1901 census, Aberlour, Banff, is living at 7 East Derrybeg, with James Stuart, Head, age 63 Farmer, born Banffshire, Aberlour Jean Stuart, wife, age 62 b. Morayshire, St Andrews Jean M. Stuart, daughter, single, age 38, born Morayshire, Forres Robert J. Stuart, son, age 19, born Banffshire, Aberlour William M. Grant, grandson, age 13, born Banffshire, Aberlour 'Jean M. Stuart' is actually 'Jean McIntosh', natural born daughter of Jean McBeath Stuart (wife of James here in the census). Jean McIntosh had two illegitimate children previously with John Grant: James Grant born 1880 and Jessie Ann born 1884. John Grant, the father of these children, was born in 1857 at Whitehorse, Edinvillie, Aberlour to John Grant and Janet Stuart. I have spent a fortune searching for a birth record for William M. Grant on Scotland's People and have not found a single satisfactory entry. I have concluded that he is the 3rd child of Jean McIntosh and John Grant but I cannot prove that. If anyone knows who the parents of William M. Grant are, please let me know! Thanks, Gay

Gay, have you looked for him as William McIntosh? If his father did not sign his birth certificate, he would have been registered under his mother's surname. You could also have a look for him in the 1901 census and see if he was listed as Grant or McIntosh. Anne
Hi Anne, Thank you so much! Why didn't I think of that! William Grant McIntosh (Illegitimate) Born 1887, June 5th, Derrybeg, Aberlour, Mother Jane McIntosh, Domestic Servant. Mystery solved! He was listed in the 1901 census as William M. Grant. Gay, I don't know if the Aberlour Kirk Session Minutes exist for the relevant period (or even if the Kirk Session was scrutinizing illegitimacies as that time - mine were somewhat earlier 1830s and 1840s), but in those records you may find the father named, parents summoned before the Kirk Session etc etc. Just a thought for possible extra detail and confirmation of the Grant father!
