Howard, Do you have any GEDDES/DUNBAR connections? I am particularly interested in family connections for Hannah Margaret Loraine GEDDES who married William Matthew DUNBAR. They appear in the 1881 census in Edinburgh. I have some information on the military career of W.M. but am looking to extend the family connections. Pat Pat(rick) R. L. "John Geddes Soldier (widower of Ann Gray) illegitimate, died age 85 13-3-1869 1.30am Bogmoor Bellie, of John Geddes and Catherine Ross. Cause: general debility several months, diarrhoea 8days. Informant: P--- George Geddes [signature - v poor - Private George Geddes?] son present." - GROdeath-1869-126(Bellie)-10. John Geddes was born 15-2-1787 / bpt 1787 Bellie, Moray to John Geddes and Katherine Rose (IGI: C111262). He married 2-2-1811 Bellie (M111262), had John 17-2-1814/1814, George 10-7-1816/1816 Bellie (C111262). Howard Geddes
Pat, here's a reprise of my posting 6-Oct-2004. This is not (so far as known) my line of Geddes. Regards Howard <start> "HANNAH MARGARET LORRAINE GEDDES said to have been b. 7-Jul-1834 Edinburgh, Scot. (More accurately in terms of date and place, Hannah Margaret Loraine Geddes was bpt 11-Sep-1839 Duns, Berwick, to William Geddes and Emma D'Ogle [sic] - per IGI) m. William Matthew DUNBAR Esq, 34th Regiment. b. abt1836, Ireland m. in St. Peters Episcopal Church, Lutton Place, Edinburgh. William was a Major in the 24th Regiment of Foot and Lieutenant Colonel of the 34th Regiment." Her parents are: "WILLIAM GEDDES b. 22-Jan-1794 Gilbraltar d. 21-Mar-1879 52 George Sq, Edinburgh, Scotland (his home), m. 15-May-1827 Dum Dum, Calcutta, West Bengal, India, EMMA D'OYLY." Start of his obit: "The late colonel Geddes, C.B. - A distinguished soldier and estimable citizen has passed from our midst, in the person of Colonel William Geddes, C.B., who died at his residence in George Square, on Friday, week, at the ripe age of 86 years. The father of the deceased officer, the late Dr. James Geddes, was a native of Forres; his mother being a daughter of the late Mr. James Loraine of Angelraw, Berwickshire. He was born at Gibraltar on the 22nd January, 1794, at which time his father held the post of surgeon to the forces on this British stronghold....." Per IGI, "James Geddes m Wilelmina Lorane" 18-Feb-1790 Edinburgh Parish. I don't have more on the Dunbar family apart from the 1881 census details. But I can submerge you off-list with all the information on these Geddeses, but it's probably more than you'll ever want! Most information has come from Lolly Fendall, who is a descendant of this Geddes line. Details are also on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gaddis/, but differ in some respects. I got involved in this avenue of research through Alexander Noble GEDDES surgeon in Portsoy. His line certainly leads back towards Forres (at least as far as Elgin where his father was "supervisor of excise in Elgin"), but there is no evidence that the two families connect (despite above website). I have been trying to establish the parentage of one James GEDDES (h/o Mary SIM) who by all logic ought to be 'one of mine' being a fully paid up member of farmfolk; he is provably not the s/o Alexander Noble GEDDES despite what has been recorded in one or two places. The Orton GEDDESes mentioned in my recent posting are as likely as not connected to these Loraine and Noble strains. <end>
