I have tried Old Maps without luck. Rather than waste your time (and possibly money) on Old-Maps, try the free-of-charge 19th century Ordnance Survey maps on the site of the National Library of Scotland: http://www.nls.uk Because of the way the site works, it is not possible to give a direct URL for the image you want, but if you work your way down the Menus as follows you will find it: Digital Library - Maps - Series Maps of Scotland - Ordnance Survey maps 1847-1930 - 25 inch to the mile ... Then pick "By zoomable map ..." From the drop-down lists pick "Moray" for County and "Rafford" for Parish/Burgh, enter "Blackhills" for place (Reverrand is not indexed) and click on search. This brings up a list of hits - click on "Blackhills, Moray NJ0654". This brings up a lo-res map covering the area. Click on the left-hand of the two "+" symbols above the map, then click on the map. Once you can see "Blackhills" (which is straight south of "Rafford") click on the "grabbing hand" and use that tool to centre the image on "Blackhills". Then use the "+" tool again to zoom further in, until you can read the legends. Finally, use the "grabbing hand" to pan west from Blackhills, and you will find Reverrand. Phew! Gavin Bell

    3. Hello Melvyn, Reverrand was part of the Altyre Estate in the parish of Rafford. It gets several mentions in the book "Lochnavando No More". Going by the diagram in that book if you look at the current OS Explorer Map No. 423 then just to the west of Blackhills where it says "Forestry Cottages" then that roughly triangular shaped clearing in the Newtyle Forest is where it was. Regards, Alastair MacDonald

NZ has a website called papers past, there is information in there about Duncan Youngs death etc(he drowned). I'm happy to pass on that information to you, that I have located if you wish. However she said it was a difficult because of un-indexed papers and that is where extra cost comes in. Funny how you say that Grandfathers met spouses because of the War. That happened with a few of ours too hence English cousins umpteen times removed. My own parents met at the start of WW2 ..... ? Do keep in touch though for you never know what can turn up. Born respectively 1768 &1772. Be aware also the Winchester surname is sometimes entered as Winster in Census records and I have even seen Vinchester. In my honest opinion, and I am no expert, I doubt any of us will get further back than we have on the OPR because registration (or any kind of written record) was not the norm back then for working/normal class people and unless an ancestor was landed gentry there will be no records of them. The only way to find out more is if their farm or land were rented from a Landowner and then they would be named and entered in the Estate Accounts. The Family Research Centre in Elgin would be able to inform you of potential Landowners. Not sure who was the Landowner back then but I suspect it was the Grants of Rothimurchus/Grantown on Spey. Estate papers are held at the National Archives for Scotland in Edinburgh and most are NOT indexed. You have to hire a researcher to look if you cannot go yourself and this is usually the best way as they know their way around the place. Not all researchers are familiar with NAS work so you have to chose someone well experienced in NAS researching. I have found that using a researcher in many instances works out cheaper than the cost of visiting or searching on-line. And I would also caution that good as the IGI (familysearch.org) is in assisting research prior to 1875, entries must be treated with caution if an LDS member has submitted the information because the research involved for their particular needs are not always infallible to any subsequent authentication.
