    2. Patrick Dunbar
    3. Gavin, Many thanks for your comment. Having checked my copy, I have now added the information - shame on the SAFHS for not including it as a note! I have found the book very useful for place-name spelling. To aid computer searching I use the book version as standard, and include other spellings as variations. I find that sometimes (often?!) parish names are quoted as place names, so the book comes in useful in deciding locations. This doesn't help of course where parish and place bear the same name. Kind regards, Pat POSTSCRIPT - Just to avoid queries SAFHS = Scottish Association of Family History Societies >Pat wrote: > Reference the recent postings, I have found the following publication > of great value. > "The Parishes, Registers & Registrars of Scotland" ISBN 1-874722-05-6, > published by the Scottish Association of Family History Societies. > I obtained my copy from the Aberdeen & NE Scotland FHS No quarrel with that, but it is important to realise that the outline Parish maps in that volume reflect the counties and parishes as they were after the great re-alignment of 1891. Before that date, some counties and many parishes had significantly different boundaries, some of which can have a dramatic effect on where you might need to look for your ancestors. 1. Re: GEDDES/DUNBAR
    2. Howard Geddes
    3. Pat, here's a reprise of my posting 6-Oct-2004. This is not (so far as known) my line of Geddes. Regards Howard <start> "HANNAH MARGARET LORRAINE GEDDES said to have been b. 7-Jul-1834 Edinburgh, Scot. (More accurately in terms of date and place, Hannah Margaret Loraine Geddes was bpt 11-Sep-1839 Duns, Berwick, to William Geddes and Emma D'Ogle [sic] - per IGI) m. William Matthew DUNBAR Esq, 34th Regiment. b. abt1836, Ireland m. in St. Peters Episcopal Church, Lutton Place, Edinburgh. William was a Major in the 24th Regiment of Foot and Lieutenant Colonel of the 34th Regiment." Her parents are: "WILLIAM GEDDES b. 22-Jan-1794 Gilbraltar d. 21-Mar-1879 52 George Sq, Edinburgh, Scotland (his home), m. 15-May-1827 Dum Dum, Calcutta, West Bengal, India, EMMA D'OYLY." Start of his obit: "The late colonel Geddes, C.B. - A distinguished soldier and estimable citizen has passed from our midst, in the person of Colonel William Geddes, C.B., who died at his residence in George Square, on Friday, week, at the ripe age of 86 years. The father of the deceased officer, the late Dr. James Geddes, was a native of Forres; his mother being a daughter of the late Mr. James Loraine of Angelraw, Berwickshire. He was born at Gibraltar on the 22nd January, 1794, at which time his father held the post of surgeon to the forces on this British stronghold....." Per IGI, "James Geddes m Wilelmina Lorane" 18-Feb-1790 Edinburgh Parish. I don't have more on the Dunbar family apart from the 1881 census details. But I can submerge you off-list with all the information on these Geddeses, but it's probably more than you'll ever want! Most information has come from Lolly Fendall, who is a descendant of this Geddes line. Details are also on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gaddis/, but differ in some respects. I got involved in this avenue of research through Alexander Noble GEDDES surgeon in Portsoy. His line certainly leads back towards Forres (at least as far as Elgin where his father was "supervisor of excise in Elgin"), but there is no evidence that the two families connect (despite above website). I have been trying to establish the parentage of one James GEDDES (h/o Mary SIM) who by all logic ought to be 'one of mine' being a fully paid up member of farmfolk; he is provably not the s/o Alexander Noble GEDDES despite what has been recorded in one or two places. The Orton GEDDESes mentioned in my recent posting are as likely as not connected to these Loraine and Noble strains. <end>

    1. Dean of Guild
    2. Denise Thompson
    3. Hello Listers, I have an ancestor who was a Merchant and Baillie in Elgin. At various times he occupied the positions of Dean of Guild, Hospital Master, Sheriff Substitute of Elgin, Treasurer of Kirk Session and Kirk Elder. Can someone please explain the position of Dean of Guild in Elgin. I have consulted the Occupations list on Scottish Documents, but am unsure whether this Guild would have been related to his profession or trade as a Merchant, or whether there was a separate Guild in Elgin associated with the Church or the legal fraternity. Kind regards, Denise Thompson

    3. Howard, Do you have any GEDDES/DUNBAR connections? I am particularly interested in family connections for Hannah Margaret Loraine GEDDES who married William Matthew DUNBAR. They appear in the 1881 census in Edinburgh. I have some information on the military career of W.M. but am looking to extend the family connections. Pat Pat(rick) R. L. 3. Hi William, I had another look at my records and the newspaper obit. says Norena Sarah Mackenzie was buried in Park Lawn (?). The clipping is a faxed photocopy and difficult to read. She never married. She was Presbyterian. She was born in Teeswater Ontario 13 Jul 1897 and died Montreal (I assume) 15 Jan 1959. Her parents were John Murdoch Mackenzie and Eva Gertrude Robins. She was the Director of Nursing in Montreal's Jewish General Hospital. Prior to that she was the Director of Nursing Education in Montreal General Hospital. Served in Italy during WWII with Canadian Red Cross and afterwards with UNRRA. She was a graduate of McGill University. 2. Chris Ridings
    3. I understand Mor to mean big, great, or large, and that Morag can be the Gaelic for Sarah or even Sally. However, how Morag = Sarah stretches my imagination (for an Australian). Agh = heifer, hind. So does Morag mean big heifer? I cannot find Marion, but it may derive from Marian, which may derive from Mary Ann. Chris Ridings -----Original Message----- From: Ray Hennessy [mailto:rayhennessy@iclway.co.uk] Sent: Saturday, 22 January 2005 11:54 To: MORAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MORAY] name game: Sarah & Marion Gay King asked: > How frequently in the early 1800's in official documents was > Marion substituted for someone named Sarah? And vice versa? > > I have checked the 'what's in a name' website which says that > they were used interchangeably but I am wondering if that was > really so... Morag seems to be closer to Sarah than Marion. Hi Gay I hope we get some inputs on this as it's a long jump from Sarah to Marion in my view - Sassenach that I am. I don't think we claimed full interchangeability of Sarah & Marion, but always pleased to get additional anecdotal evidence. The stories I reported in "What's In A Name" only show that the Gaelic Mór can be Anglicised as either Marion or Sarah. I suspect, but I don't know for a fact, that the anglicised version chosen might be dependent either on the area or the family. The evidence for full interchangeability is sparse which is why I classed Sarah & Marion as "Lesser Synonyms" indicating that the link is from a common name rather than direct. My correspondent in Canada who knows of an example of full interchangeability in Kilmorack, Scotland, was very clear on this but it's the only example we have found. Looking forward to any other inputs. Best wishes Ray Hennessy Forenames website: www.whatsinaname.net
