    3. Thank you to the wonderful listers who helped me immensely in my query (Louise, Ed, Anne & Audrey). I now have Slackbuie firmly in my sights and know the buildings are in ruins. I would like to contact George & Margaret Rhynis, who live at Backshalloch (thanks for this Audrey) to obtain permission to visit the area in September. Could anyone let me know the address a letter would reach them or an email address? Kind regards Pat in Western Australia -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. Hello; I have HELEN ms MCCONNACHIE , father George, mother , Jane ? She is shown on the 1881 Census of Aberdeen - W, 50, F, Marnoch, Aberdeen, Scotland which should make her birthdate as 1830 / 1831. I thought Marnoch was in Banff, but I did find a MARNO in both Strichen and Tyrie on Genuki. I can't find a Helen in Marnoch in that time frame on Scotlandspeople. I found her death which gave me her father and mothers names>no ms shown for her mother. Her marriage in the Aberdeen, St. Nicholas OPR gave only her fathers name. I know this is a long shot, but - Anyone researching this family?? Irene in Canada.

    3. Hi Everyone and particularly the People at MHS, A marvellous site! I only wish they had included those excluded parishes just over the county border, but we can't have it all, can we? What I would like to know is how do we fill in the blanks? My great-grandfather, Francis Murison, is shown in name only and I would like to fill in the names of his wife and children with some additional dates and some biographical information; also add names to the tree. Can I do this? 3. Since my last posting, I have located a map which does show the parish boundaries of Moray as they were after the County boundary adjustment of 1870, but before the major re-alignments of 1891. This is on the National Library of Scotland website, at: http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/os_scotland_county_series_list.html - scroll down to "Index to the Ordnance Survey of Elginshire 1883" Finding the boundaries of a particular parish will probably involve a good deal of zooming in and out of the image, but it is also possible to buy printouts of the maps on the NLS site. I shall certainly be ordering a copy of this one. Gavin Bell

    2. Hi Yes, it is an excellent site and Moray Heritage Services are to be congratulated for getting it online. It is early days in using it and I, too, have been able to tie up some loose ends but along the way have found some duplication and some entries which I thought would be there, missing. Where the entry has been duplicated I found that one entry had some information and the other some different data and anyone finding an entry that is relevant should check to see if, by any chance, there is another. This is not being posted by way of criticism as it must have been a tremendous undertaking to put the Index into place and I would see it as inevitable there will be some errors/omissions along the way. I am certain it will provide a bountiful source of information for all who use it and I look forward to spending time in the weeks and months ahead checking research already done and looking for new leads. The ease with which the site can be navigated is first class and all involved in its creation deserve a well earned 'Thank you.' Ian A C Scott

There would seem to be a couple of small buildings shown near a cleared area of forest. It could be a croft, I suppose. As it shows up on this map, the inference is that it still exists today, but someone who lives a bit nearer than either of us may be in a position to let you know what is there on the ground at present - even if it is only ruins. The area could be of interest for you to inspect yourself if you are going to be in the region anyway. You should be able to get there with the help of the zoomed out map. Try <http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=334405&Y=853235&A=Y&Z=5>http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=334405&Y=853235&A=Y&Z=5 To see the same are as it was in 1874 click on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.htm then enter the following coordinates into the search box: 334405, 853235 and clickm on Co-ordinate then on Search. Chose the second Elginshire site offered, and you will see Slackbuie as it was then. You can click on Enlarged View and get a better larger map which you can move around. In either map, you can change the centre of the map you are looking at by clicking on the spot for the new centre point. You can also zoom in and out of the modern map by clicking on the + and - signs at the bottom right hand corner of the map. This will give you abetter idea of the position of Slackbuie and the surrounding places. HTH _ _ Regards, Ed Barron <ejbarron@netspace.net.au>

Does anyone know if one exists? I don't know of a good online one. And for some reason, parish boundaries seem to have been omitted from many historical maps. The current Ordnance Survey maps do not show parish boundaries in Scotland. Older editions of the Ordnance Survey (eg the "1 inch to 1 mile" series and older printings of the now discontinued Pathfinder series) do show parish boundaries. The reprints of the Victorian Ordnance Survey 1" series distributed by Caledonian Maps (www.caledonianmaps.co.uk) also show the boundaries. Note, however, that all these show the boundaries as they were BEFORE 1891, when there was a major revision. And there was another important exchange of territory between Moray and Inverness-shire in 1870, which also affected parish boundaries. There are maps which show the County boundaries before that date, but I have never seen any map which shows the parish boundaries of Moray before 1891. Gavin Bell

    1. Re: [MORAY] Re: LIBINDX onLine at Long Last!!!
    2. Bryan & Melissa Hallyburton
    3. THANK YOU to the ones who replied to my post re the LIBINDX. Anne your advise was wonderful and all taken in, thank you. I have a copy of the death cert for the mentioned James Fraser. He died 1875 in Melbourne, Australia aged 57 and his parents were listed as James Fraser & Anne Watson. James had married Janet Ritchie in Rafford, Scotland prior to their arrival here in OZ. James & Janet lived in Tasmania for 17 years and were in Victoria 4 years prior to James's death. The children listed at the time of James death were James, William, Isabella, Janet, Anne and one other name that is illegible. Janet Fraser died 1882 aged 52 years. Her parents were listed as being William Ritchie and Isabella Calder. So hence when I found these two familles on the site I could not understand the names mentioned. So now I guess that it means that James Fraser (senior) lived at Hardmuir. Janet Ritchie lived at Whiteharriewood and her father William Ritchie lived as Hardwood. Now another question has appeared..... WHERE are these places and do they still exist in Moray? As to the children of James and Janet Fraser: James was born Scotland William was born Scotland Isabella was born Scotland Jeanette Fraser was found born 1858 in Tasmania (she was found listed as a child of James Fraser & Jeanette Ritchie, so it seems it may have been a typo error in the spelling) Ann Justina Fraser was found born 1864 in Tasmania (parents were James Fraser & Janet Ritchie) There was also a female child found born in 1860, but no name was mentioned for her. At the time of James Fraser death at least one child was dead prior to his death and that was the son James. Also it looks like Isabella may have been dead also prior to her father. (the writing is hard to read for Isabella's age at her fathers death). My tie to the Fraser family is through the son William Fraser. He was my great great grandfather. His youngest daughter was my great grandmother, who lived to the age of 92 years, and her own parents died very young leaving her an orphan and raised by her elder siblings. If anyone has links to any of the mentioned families or can help fill in any gaps I would love to hear from you. 3. Hi All, I agree that the site is excellent. I have family tree info that could be added to the site as several of my relatives are in the name list. Does anyone know how to add the tree info? Highland Railway pictures would have been a nice addition too as some of my relatives worked for the Highland Railway. Also, one person Philip McLeod (there are only two) is indicated as having a brother William McLeod (which William???). This Philip is the son of Andrew McLeod and Ann McLeod from Nigg, Ross & Cromarty. My William McLeod is from Nigg, Ross & Cromarty and as yet, although both familes ended up in Forres, Moray, I haven't been able to link the families. Either Andrew or Ann McLeod or both could be related to my family. 3. Hi Murray I suggest you have a browse of the John Thomson maps on http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/atlas.html There are two maps you might need to look at: Northern Part of Aberdeen & Banff Shires Nairn and Elgin The parish boundaries are marked in colour but the maps are a little bit approximate [1 inch = 2 miles, ish]. However, I've found them quite acceptable. If you want a hard copy, Caledonian Maps supply reprints of Victorian 1896 Ordnance Survey maps with parish boundaries marked. www.caledonianmaps.co.uk/ I can't tell you which sheets you need but the website has a gazetteer. Maybe someone has access to them and can do look ups for you. I only have the Banff & Aberdeenshire ones but I believe Gavin Bell has put a large number in the new map library at the ANESFHS office. Having them mailed to NZ might push the price up a bit. However, at £6 [25% off for more than 4] they are a bargain.
