Has anyone heard of this parish? This is Monquhitter, which is pronounced roughly as spelled above. It's in Aberdeenshire, and the only village of any size in the parish is Cuminestown (not to be confused with Cummingston in Moray, which is an entirely different place with a similar name) .... > Castle of Auchery" - > Question 1. You can see where it is on www.streetmap.co.uk - just search for Castle of Auchry. You will need to zoom in to see the name. You can also go to www.old-maps.co.uk and use the same co-ordinates 378500,850500 to find it on the 1874 map. (Choose teh Aberdeenshire option). > Ques.3 "...and Barbara TAAS his wife..." Can anyone tell me anything > about this surname - it seems a fairly unusual name in Scotland - Is it > of Dutch origin? The writing here is very clear. I think it is probably Tawse, which isn't uncommon. G F Black says that its origin is as a phonetic spelling of 'Tamhas', the Gaelic version of Thomas. HTH Anne

How do I view the thread of a posting when it has "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list"? I am researching McCONACHIEs of MORTLACH and a recent post had only someone's answer. The original question was not gatewayed to this MORAY rootsweb website. As far as I know there is no surname mailing list covering the name McConachie but any guidance would be appreciated. Ian
Even easier - once you have tried a faulty link the URL will be in the pull down list of URLs you have visited ans you can easily edit it. The incorrect character will either appear as a \ or more likely as %5C (delete all 3 characters of "%5C") - just edit the address. Unfortunately IE is very non-compliant but also very forgiving of design faults and so designers using only IE to check their code can create all sorts of errors that good compliant browsers (ie everything other than IE) hiccup on. The good news is that the coders of LibIndex have made a fairly simple fault which you can work around. What they have done is to use the "\" character instead of "/" in some of the hyperlinks. If you click on the buttons on the left of the screen you should be able to see the hyperlink address at the bottom of the screen - e.g. click on "People" to open the People options and then click on "People Search" and you will see the link is http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/people\mainfilter.asp. If you type this in as a web address remembering to change the \ before mainfilter to / first - i.e. enter http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/people/mainfilter.asp - it will take you to the correct page. Can I do > this? I looked him up to see what there actually is about him. Did you click on the blue 'i' symbol to the right of his name? This takes you to a further screen. Then you get a whole lot of symbols in a separate section at the left-hand side. Scroll down and click on 'View Details'. This tells you that the information in the index was taken from a death notice in the 'Courant' of 24 December 1907, which reads something like this: "On 15 December 1907, at 40 Catherine Street, Banff, Francis Murison, aged 71". So you know that he was born about 1836. Yoour next port of call is Scotland's People (SP) www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk where you can view an image of his death certificate. This will tell you the names of his wife and parents. You can also view images of the 1891 and 1901 census entries, and a transcription of the 1881 census. This will be his family in the 1881 census: Dwelling: Smithy Of Itlaw Census Place: Alvah, Banff, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203436 GRO Ref Volume 146 EnumDist 4 Page 2 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Francis MURISON M 44 M Gamrie, Banff, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Blacksmith (Master Employing 2 Men) Margaret MURISON M 46 F Mortlach, Banff, Scotland Rel: Wife Occ: Blacksmiths Wife Margaret MURISON U 17 F Alvah, Banff, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Blacksmiths Daur Francis MURISON 15 M Alvah, Banff, Scotland Rel: Son Occ: Blacksmith (Apprentice) James MURISON 12 M Alvah, Banff, Scotland Rel: Son Occ: Scholar John MURISON 9 M Alvah, Banff, Scotland Rel: Son Occ: Scholar Elizabeth MURISON 7 F Alvah, Banff, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Scholar William MURISON 3 M Alvah, Banff, Scotland Rel: Son Alexander MORRISON U 23 M Marnoch, Banff, Scotland Rel: Servant Occ: Blacksmith (Journeyman) Taking this information and using it in the IGI at www.familysearch.org shows that this is the family of Francis Murison and Margaret Garrow, who were married at Banff on 7 December 1861: Margaret Isabella, born 26 January 1864 James, born 6 October 1864 Francis, born 31 December 1868 John, born 27 April 1871 Elizabeth Garrow, born 21 January 1874 Back to SP, where the marriage certificate will tell you the names of both sets of parents and the couple's ages at marriage. You can also view all the children's birth certificates (including William, born 1877/8, who is not listed in the IGI). Next I had a look at FreeCen http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl wher I found the following household Piece: SCT1841/155 Place: Gamrie-Banffshire Enumeration District: 1 Civil Parish: Gamrie Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: - Folio: 1 Page: 3 Address: Balgrayhill Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks MUIRISON Francis M 30 Ag Labour Banffshire MUIRISON Isabella F 30 Outside Census County (1841) MUIRISON John M 9 Banffshire MUIRISON James M 7 Banffshire MUIRISON Francis M 4 Banffshire So it looks as if the parents of your Francis were Francis and Isabella. However the IGI lists only one child of parents of those names in the county of Banff, Isobel, born 16 February 1844 in Gamrie, mother's name Isabel Cameron. It does list the marriage of Francis Murison and Isabel Cameron on 24 November 1831 at Gamrie. I also had a look at the Banff burial ground site http://www.geocities.com/kubee21/banff/Banff7.html#505 but though there is a stone to a Murison, it's from 1776 - and we haven't got back that far (yet!) On the other hand, the Aberdeen and North East Scotland Family History Society's online index to gravestones http://www.abdn.net/mi-index/ lists in Alvah churchyard Names and dates on Stone No 160: William FINDLATER William MURISON 3 Jun 1881 Margaret GARROW 2 Aug 1897 Francis MURISON 15 Dec 1907 Margaret Isabella MURISON 6 Nov 1912 Francis MURISON 9 Dec 1916 Elizabeth GARROW 4 Jun 1923 James MURISON 19 Dec 1925 John MURISON 29 Jul 1944 From now on, a bit of speculation. Margaret Garrow may be the one born 14 and baptised 15 April 1834 in Mortlach, parents James Garrow and Margaret Booth. This couple also had the following children: William, baptised 6 October 1822, Rothiemay James, baptised 15 January 1826, Mortlach Elizabeth, baptised 20 January 1828, Mortlach Robert, baptised 18 September 1840, Mortlach My next port of call was FreeCEN again where I found index entries for various Garrows in Mortlach, but there seems to be a bug in the system because clicking on 'view household' produced a message saying'sorry, we found no entries'. I also noticed in the IGI the births of three more Francis Murisons. On was born on 28 August 1864 in Aberlour, parents James Murison and Isabella Garrow. This couple wer married in 28 November 1857 in Banff and also had James, born 26 September 1859, Banff Margaret, born 24 July 1862, Mortlach John, born 20 May 1866, Fordyce However none of this family appear in the 1881 census, so they must presumably have left the country altogether. However their marriage certificate would tell you if there was any connection with your Francis. Then there was Francis Murison, born 15 September 1856 at Gamrie, parents Alexander Murison and Ann Simpson. They also had Isabella Cheves, born 12 March 1841 William, born 28 November 1844 The gap in this list, and the dates of it, suggest that Alexander and Ann may have been adherents of the Free Church, which broke away from the Church of Scotland in 1843. This is the family in the 1841 census: Piece: SCT1841/155 Place: Gamrie-Banffshire Enumeration District: 2 Civil Parish: Gamrie Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: - Folio: 2 Page: 11 Address: Northfield Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks MORRISON Alexander M 20 Ag Labourer Banffshire MORRISON Ann F 20 Banffshire MORRISON Margaret F 10m Banffshire MORRISON Isabella F 3m Banffshire To see whether this family is anything to do with you, you would need to get Alexander's death certificate, assuming that he lived until 1855 and died in Scotland. The 1851 census would also be useful. The other Francis Murison was was born 9 May and bapstised 23 June 1810 in Gamrie. I wonder if this could be the father of your Francis? He is one of the family of James Murison and Anne Waddell, who seem to have been married in South Leith, Midlothian, on 1 November 1798: The other children listed are: Jean, baptised 10 May 1801, South Leith John, baptised 28 May 1803, Gamrie James, baptised 13 July 1812, Gamrie So there is quite a lot of information for you to follow up. I have to emphasize 1. Don't believe anything until you have seen the original document 2. Especially don't trust anything in the IGI which is 'submitted' rather than 'extracted' 3. Don't use SP to order anything before 1855. Hope this helps Anne

I also had a look at the Banff burial ground site http://www.geocities.com/kubee21/banff/Banff7.html#505 but though there is a stone to a Murison, it's from 1776 - and we haven't got back that far (yet!) On the other hand, the Aberdeen and North East Scotland Family History Society's online index to gravestones http://www.abdn.net/mi-index/ lists in Alvah churchyard Names and dates on Stone No 160: William FINDLATER William MURISON 3 Jun 1881 Margaret GARROW 2 Aug 1897 Francis MURISON 15 Dec 1907 Margaret Isabella MURISON 6 Nov 1912 Francis MURISON 9 Dec 1916 Elizabeth GARROW 4 Jun 1923 James MURISON 19 Dec 1925 John MURISON 29 Jul 1944 >From now on, a bit of speculation. Hope this helps Anne ==== MORAY Mailing List ==== MORAY OPR's. The OPR's for the Moray area are now starting to be transcribed and volunteers are needed. Carol asked, < Would you say that a Post Runner was a postman ? > Some words stick in our language. If I was selling a second hand car I would probably advertise it as a "Good Runner". If I were to say "Do you fancy a run?" my wife wouldn't put her running shoes on but get in the car. So I suppose that your postman could have been involved in some express delivery system either working on the Mail Coach or involved with the quick transportation of mail, to and from the railway collection points perhaps.
