First, the Libindx is a super resource to have online. Congratulations to Graeme Wilson and his colleagues. I've used the previous in-house version on several occasions, and was severely impressed by the amount of work that had gone into the indexing. The only trouble is that the online version has removed one excellent excuse for me to actually visit Elgin! Regarding Gordon McLeod's specific point, at least one list of employees of the Highland Railway exists: one is/was available to researchers in what was the SRO at West Register House. If I recall correctly, it was employees employed in 1914/1915 with their prior history of employment with the railway. I am Archivist for The Highland Railway Society. We have just this past week acquired a ledger "Highland Railway - List of Employees in Locomotive Department" dated 1906, it has handwritten alphabetic entries of all those signing on with the HR, from 1906 until the great War, with occupations, dates of entry and leaving HR service, and remarks. I'm not sure how it relates to the ledger at the SRO. Re McLeods, I can tell you that: - George McLeod was employed as a wagon builder from 28 Sep 06 to 13 Jan 1910. - John A McLeod was a labourer 5 Dec 1906 to 6 July 1907 in the Carriage Shops, and later in the fitting shop 1913/14 - he left again on 22 Jan 1914. - Robert McLeod, fitter, 9 Apr 1910 - 31 Jan 1911. - Wm McLeod - cleaner at Aviemore 6 Mar 1913, left 10 Apr 1913 must not have liked it much! - Murdo McLeod barboy(?) 23 Jul 1913 - 17 May 1914 - Angus McLeod, apprentice wagon builder 31 Mar 1914 - (blank) - Don McLeod, loadman(?) Inverness 15 Jun 1914 - (blank) - Daniel McLeod, cleaner, 8 Jul 1914 - 3 Aug 1914. Above is just a one-off. I'm afraid it's not possible to offer a 'look-up' service, so please don't ask! If anyone's interested, they'll have to join the Society first. We have a website http://www.hrsoc.org.uk/ which is currently under reconstruction but the old version is still accessible. Hello I too am amazed and excited by the online index and have spent many happy hours finding my family. My question is - if there are newspaper articles or photos, is it possible to request them and how? Hi, as a newcomer to this list I'm hoping some wonderful person with local knowledge can help me. On researching my Johnston ancestors in Banff I was delighted to find the following entry in the Banff church register (Film accessed through LDS) "Jean Johnston daughter of William Johnston Wheel Wright in Banff and lawfull son to James Johnston some time farmer in Castle of Auchery" - Question 1. I can find no castle or village of that name in either the Banff or Scotland gazetteer - I'm fairly confident of the spelling, the writing in the entry is pretty good. Ques.2....."Minwhiter parish..." where this castle is supposed to be? The W in the centre of the word is exactly the same as those in wheel wright and the M at the start bears a close resemblance to other Ms on the page. Has anyone heard of this parish? Ques.3 "...and Barbara TAAS his wife..." Can anyone tell me anything about this surname - it seems a fairly unusual name in Scotland - Is it of Dutch origin? The writing here is very clear. It is the old story, when you get an answer to one question it always seems to pose moire! Can anyone help me please? Regards, Mary Legge (Melbourne, Australia)

Hi I do not believe you will be able to access the Newspaper Items online. After all what has been provided must have taken many hours to put together and to digitise and index all the newspaper items would be a colossal undertaking. We must be thankful that Moray Council has done what it has and I only wish other would follow suit. I do know you can obtain photocopies of newspaper items at GBP0.75 per sheet as I recently obtained some from them. If any of you had ancestors who went to Shetland the following website has details of many families www.bayanne.info/Shetland I know from working with the records here in Shetland that many fishermen, coopers, gutters etc married and settled here, my own granny Jessie Gardiner being one of them. Hope this helps someone. Janice

Dear Anne I noticed that you had found some more members of your GRIGOR tree thanks to the Libindx. I have a Margaret GRIIGOR in my tree who married an Arthur Siveright and wondered if there is any connection? I found her death in the Libindx in 1801 but have never managed to find any other information about her. Originally I thought her surname was Grigory. If you have any info on her it would be much appreciated. Regards Julia Dundee, Scotland
Hi Got a couple of photocopies of newspaper items recently and the charge was £1.50. Ian A C Scott
I've had a word with Graeme about some of the questions people have been asking. He is very happy with the feedback so far - he has only told about half a dozen people, but the word seems to be spreading fast - and all your comments are appreciated. He says that the IT people know that it only works properly with IE at the moment, but they are 'looking into it'. Graeme would also be happy to receive additions, amendments and inconsistencies, so if you have anything like that please e-mail him at graeme.wilson@moray.gov.uk Anne
