    3. Just tried to check Scotlands People to see if they have 1851 onwards census. Want to check on the weekend, but couldnt get past home page because I didnt have any money in it. Dont want to waste money before Saturday (true Scot!), could someone tell me if Scotlands People has the census 1851 and later please. Home page doesnt tell you what records they have. I have found a family in 1841 census not in the place we thought they would be and now I want to try and follow them to see where they went. I havent used SP for a while and I have forgotten if it has the census. Thanks Barbara -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. 3. I guess it is better than nothing, but to me it is incredibly expensive, and there are only 3 (I think) census years on it. When I compare it to ancestry.com, it retards research so much in comparison. I can sit and page through 150 pages of the entire Brooklyn, New York 1850 census in one evening on ancestry.com -- that's the original images I'm talking about. I can review the whole neighborhood. Then I can jump to any of the other years, or nearby areas, or quickly peruse the whole state for a certain name, and quickly look at the originals for those records. All this for $100 a year. I can spend hours reading the census every night if I want to. And I do spend a lot of time on it, it probably comes out to pennies per image. And there are some Canadian and UK censuses on it also. The contrast with Scotland's People is huge. I hope someday ancestry.com will get the Scottish censuses, or is it an issue that the government will not release them to private companies? And many people are doing a wonderful job getting some of them up for free, if they still need help when I retire I would like to help with that. Surnames: bannerman Cummings Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BgC.2ACI/1268 Message Board Post: I am desperately trying to trace my Grandfathers paternal family and have come across a huge stumbling block from the word go. My grandfather was born Peter Bannerman on 4.12.1910 to Alice Bannerman of Elgin, Peter was then adopted a month after being born. In a Paternity suite nearly a year later, stating a William Cummings as the Father, the address Alice gave was Muirton Farm, Kinloss Forres, situated where the Air force Base now stands. Its thought she may have left the area soon after. Other than the information stated above we have been unable to trace any substantial records regarding his paternal mother any suggestions on how I may continue my search or any information regarding Peter or Alice would be most welcome.

    2. William, The scotlandspeople site dropped off line this evening. When it comes back up, I'm sure they will explain the cause (perhaps a power outage or server crash). As to your problem with viewing your record, there is an area for complaints in which you send them the record number and the problem. I have had problems twice and after notifying them, I've received an email apology, an air-mailed copy of the record, the restoration of my 5 page credits and a restart of my research time. Very generous of them. -- Jo-Ann Croft

    3. Hi Sylvia, One way might be to subscribe to the Rootsweb list GEN-Railwaymen. Line Societies, like the Highland Railway Society, tend to focus on the history of the railway itself rather than its employees, so whilst we are likely to know how many tubes were in Cawdor Castle's boiler, we are unlikely to know even the name of the person who drove the loco for umpteen years. So you'll have more to tell us than we have to tell you! In fact, if you put together a short article on your gt-gdfather and submit to the Society's Journal (that's you telling us), you never know what feedback you might get (that's us telling you). 3. I had another idea today and took another look at the Rafford 1851 census. Sure enough, there it was, in the Altyre district (ED 1, Page 8) Harwood William Ritchie/head/mar/57/masson/Rafford Isabel Ritchie/wife/mar/55/Divie William Ritchie/son/um/30/general labourer/Rafford John Ritchie/grandchild/5/Inverness Isabel Ritchie/dau/unm/19/domestic work/Rafford I enjoyed the enumerator's description of the Altyre district: "The Altyre district is that part of the parish of Rafford which is bounded by the parish of Edinkillie on the south and south-west, the parish of Forres on the north and west, the district of Blervie on the east and the district of Cluny on the south-east. The length of this district is computed to be [3.5] miles by [?2?] miles in breadth. The lower part on thenorth is nearly level but towards the south the ground rises a considerable height. The district or estate is nearly covered with wood, the only open ground of any extent being around the mansion-house and in its vicinity. The farms in the district are all ver y small with the exception of one on the south-side and the lands farmed by the proprietor himself. The population consists of 109 males and 102 females, in all 211. The number of occupiers is 40 - inhabited houses 40 - uninhabited 1 - building none. This is the western division [of the parish of Rafford]. So we know that Janet's parents were living at Harwood/Hardwood/Harriewood/Whiteharriedwood in 1851. Mannachie Lodge still stands (I actually know the present occupants slightly). If you go to www.streetmap.co.uk and search for Manachie Farm. Just south-east ofit you will see a distillery (this is Dallas Dhu, which is now a visitor centre). Imediately west of the distilery there is a road junction. Mannachie Lodge is the tiny pink square in the south-west corner of the road jundction, between the road and the burn (stream)which flows past the distillery from the little pond in the woods. If you use the grid reference 303500,856500 in the search box the arrow should point to the Lodge. We still haven't worked out where Har(rie)wood is but we're working on it. HTH Anne

I have just found my 3rd great grandmother Margaret (Robertson) Chalmers (wife of James Logie Chalmers) applying for poor relief at age 96. I assume she is living in Elgin at the time. Can the poor relief records be ordered from the Elgin library or how does one access the information they contain? This find was because of the new Libindx - what a great site. 1. Paterson and Torrie in Rafford
    2. alan conchie
    3. Hello everyone. This is my first posting, so I hope it works correctly. We are trying to find out more about Alexander and Jane Paterson (nee Torrie). They were married at Rafford in 1840: the wedding certificate shows him as a Farm Servant in Blervie and she as resident in Woodside. The 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses show her still living in Woodside (aged 82 in 1901) but he does not appear (died?). He was alive in 1859 when his youngest child Isobella was born. We do not know when either were born or died, or whether either Paterson or Torrie were Rafford families. We have searched all the Moray listings from the time the lists began but can find little about Rafford and its families. Does anyone have any knowledge of these families? It is likely that Alexander and Jane are buried in Rafford church. Are there any MIs for Rafford? Isabella Paterson married William Nicol (born Dallas) in 24/10/1890, and it is from this union that we are descended. His parents were Alexander Nicol (1813-1879) and Janet McGillivray (1820-1896) both of whom ran the Dallas post office between the 1870s and 1890s. We have traced the Nicol family back to a James Nicol (1719-1777) of Kintessack. If anyone is researching the Nicol family in Kintessack/Moy and of Dallas, or knows of a John McGillivray married to Janet Falconer, who had a child, Donald McGillivray in 1791, we will be very happy to expand on what we know. 3. How do I find railway information about my great grandfather, John Russell? His obituary in the Elgin Courant and Courier of Feb. 12, 1901 mentions he "left the railway service some 15 years ago, and took the farm of Wester Bauds"...He carried on a coal business at the station [at Orbliston] He was Superintendent of the Orbliston Mission Hall Sunday School, [for nearly forty years.] In a Church of Scotland Teachers' Magazine of Sept. 1916, he is remembered in this way - "His name is intimately associated with that of Mr. C. Kennedy, Stores Superintendent Highland Railway, Inverness, in the founding of the Orbliston Sabbath School in 1872...for over fifteen years the pupils assembled in the waiting-room of Orbliston Station, till...the Mission Hall was built in 1888.- The idea for the Sabbath School was the idea of John's sister, Miss Agnes Russell. I hope to be in Elgin for an Aug. 12th wedding, and plan on doing family research again, while I'm there. I visited Scotland in 1998. I can't wait to make this return trip. It's always enjoyable to read all the stories and helpful hints of this site.
