    3. Hi Ann, Maybe you can help with some expertise here. I was looking forward to checking the website out but cant find the Town.of Boharm. I know that this town was wholely in Banffshire until 1891 when the borders were redrawn, cutting it almost in half. I think the northern part lies in what is Morayshire? I guess I just want to find my ancestors on a great wehsite like this. So why didnt they include this area? 3. The image was never lost, it was never there. Thanks Ray. I did look-up the previous searches, and checked what you suggested. I am still convinced that what I got in the “View Paid” is not what was shown in the Results Navigation. Here’s why: The Results Navigation ( from left to right ) gave me the results of my search which was what I was looking for, as follows: 1, 1934, Innes, Elspet, F, 82, Glenlivet, Banff, 157/02, 0006 What the “View Paid” gave me was: Correct year of death = 1934 1) Margaret McHardy 2) Jane Ann McGillivray 3) Arthur Christie There is a mistake there and that is why I sent the email. For lengthier > research, I guess the solution is to order the census microfilm > through the > LDS library. For any research before 1855, using the IGI and ordering the microfilm is a cheaper and better option, because (for example) you can look at other people's baptisms and marriages in case your folk might have been witnesses, and you can copy all of a family from the same film at no extra charge (assuming they are there, of course). You only need the pre-1855 stuff on SP if you cannot find it using the IGI and microfilms. It's after 1855 that SP really comes into its own - and it wins by a mile. Apart from one US state, there doesn't seem to be anywhere that you can view a complete index and then download images of certificates at a modest additional charge. Everywhere else you have to send away for the certificate. GBP6.50 in England and Wales A$10 in Australia, NZ$30 in New Zealand, I believe?? Once you've found the right one in the SP indexes it costs peanuts to get the certificate by comparison - and you get it instantly. And how much do you have to pay for a certificate in the USA - assuming that you are allowed to buy one at all? Sure, I'd like to be able to have a season ticket for SP. But in the meantime it beats everywhere else hands down. Anne

    3. Hi Ian; I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help after all; the listings I have only go up to 1855, after that I guess you check Scotland's People. 3. Holly: In my opinion, comparing ancestry to scotlandspeople is like comparing apples and oranges. Ancestry has poor coverage of Scotland at best. I live here in the US and can tell you that I found more information on SP and the good people on the lists at rootsweb than anything on ancestry. I think SP has more relevant information when it comes to my Scottish ancestors than Ancestry has with my American or Canadian ancestors. Most of what I have found from SP is freely available on the IGI (but a few of them were missed <g>). I prefer to search from the comfort of my home and that is worth the price that I pay to scotlandspeople (although I do not think it is that unreasonable). Not only that, I am impatient and do not want to wait for films to come in to my local FHS <g>. It is great to find people on a census, but that does not tell me who their parents were if they are listed as heads of family on the census. It does not tell me witness / informant information on the christenings, marriages or deaths. Personally, that is what I am looking for. But in all fairness, you may have had a better experience with ancestry than I. Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and search the 1901 census for Alice. With a name like that she should not be too hard to find. William is likely to be a harder nut to crack, but you could start by looking in the census for any William Cummings of an age to father a child in 1910. If you find one in Kinloss it wouldbe worth a look at the image to see if he was at Muirton. Otherwise you'll probably need to wait until 2012 when the 1911 census is released! Best wishes Anne

    3. Ian, Yes, I can see your point. For someone who only wants a couple records, ancestry.com is expensive. And in the US, vital records are not centralized, so there is no central database. We have to contact states and local governments individually for that information. My only connection to Scotland at this point is a woman who emigrated in 1836 to the US, so I am looking more at older records. But it does seem that you can breeze through 30 credits in no time, and just be getting oriented to what you may need to look for! For lengthier research, I guess the solution is to order the census microfilm through the LDS library. 3. My Grandfather, William MACPHERSON, worked on the railway in Elgin from 1895 until 1902. In about 1900 he was promoted and went to live in Aberdeen, he work mainly between Aberdeen and Elgin. Does anyone have any idea if he would have worked for the Highland Railway or the Great North Railway? Where can I find more information about the Railways in Elgin? As well as find out more information about my Grandfather's employment by the railway from 1895-1902? Whichever railway he worked for, had a branch line, at that time to Lossiemouth. He was able to travel there either free or at a very reduced cost on his day off and annual holiday week. He used to describe the wonderful times he and his friends had at Lossiemouth. This was where he first learned to "body surf" in the sea! There were also rowing boats. My Grandfather told many wonderful tales of the time when he worked on the railway. He left school at the age of 14 in 1895 and got his very first 3 piece suit ( jacket, waistcoat and trousers), which cost the huge amount of 1 Guinea ( 1GB Pound and 1 shilling) for his first job on the railway. This suit was hemmed up in the arms and legs and sides so that he could grow into it!!!! He used to proudly announce that this was his second best suit when he went to South Africa in 1902. I remember many of his stories of life in Elgin in the 1890's but am very short on verifiable facts. Any information would be welcomed. Colleen Canada

    1. Re: [MORAY] ScotlandsPeople
    2. Hi Holly As I see it you are not comparing like for like. Scotlandspeople allows you full access to the registers for Births Marriages and Deaths post 1855 subject to the restrictions of 100 years for Births, 75 for Marriages and 50 for Deaths. It has Census images for 1891 and 1901 and the index for the 1881 with the 1841, 1851, 1861, and 1871 projected to follow this year. In addition the Old Parish records, some dating back to 1553, can be searched and images of those are also in the pipeline. I have subscribed to Ancestry.com but have yet to find access to Births, Marriages and Deaths in the USA. I have used it to look at the 1930 Census for the only relative I had who emigrated to USA and found him and his family but in relative terms it was expensive. It all depends on what you are looking for, and how much, whether or not $100 is costly. Ian A C Scott

    3. Hi, Many thanks and congratulations to all involved in Libindx. This is a terrific resource which has already provided me with lots of information. In particular, I have several Headstone references which I would like to follow up, namely, U81, U82 and Ro482. Can anyone advise me where I can view a full transcription of these headstones? Is there an MI publication for these cemeteries i.e.. Urquhart and Rothes? While searching Libindx, I have come across many entries for which I have substantial additional information and I'm sure this applies to many people. I realise that any details would have to be double-checked, but is there a procedure for submitting these for inclusion on the database? Thanks, Ian Cameron

    3. Original message from Anne Peters > I am searching for James and Isabella (Spence) Grant. > I do not > know much about their lives in Scotland and would like to learn > more. Well, I have been having a look for your Grants. Speymouth Parish Register: "James Grant and Isabel Spence both residing in this parish were married on the 2nd of May 1836." Elgin Parish Register: "Anno 1836, October 18th. James Grant labourer in Elgin and Isabella Spence his spouse had a daughter (born 25th September ) baptized by the Reverend Alexander Walker named Emilia. Witnesses James Anderson and Agnes Anderson." "Anno 1841, February 28th. James Grant labourer in Elgin and Isabella Spence his spouse had a daughter (born 18th February 1841) baptized by the Reverend Alexander Topp named Isabella. Witnesses Robert Monro and Jessie Hay." "Anno 1844, April 30th. James Grant labourer in Elgin and Isabella Spence his spouse had a son (born 29th March 1844) baptized by the Reverend Alexander Topp named John. Witnesses James Miller and Isabella Russell." Rothes Parish Register: "1839. William lawful son to James Grant in the village and his spouse Isabella Spence was born 7th January and baptized 9th February. Witnesses William Mackie Green Street and William Spence the child's uncle parish of Forres." I couldnot find the family in the CD-Rom index to the 1851 census of Elgin, so I imagine that they may already have gone to Glasgow. The Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society http://www.gwsfhs.org.uk/ has a CD-Rom index to the 1851 census of Lanarkshire. Hope this helps. Anne

    2. Taken from History of Kent County by Chapman 1881: Page 503, also references son William separately on page 503 and also page 505 (Asa Gibbs entry). Quote: "James GRANT, pioneer, was born in Morayshire, Scotland in September 1813. His parents, Lewis and Jane GRANT, were natives of french ancestors who migrated to Scotland about 600 years ago and founded the disntinguished "Grant" clan of the Highlands of "Albion". He was married in May 1835 to Isabella SPENCE. Of nine children born to them, six are living -- William (see sketkch), John, George, ALbert, Robert and Jane. Mr. GRANT came to AMerican in 1850 and the same yar to Kent County, purchasing 40 acres on section 5, Ada Township. Mrs. GRANT died Feb 21, 1861, since which time Mr. Grant resides with his children. He is a Republican and belongs to the Wesleyan Methodist Church."

Their son William joined the 1st NY Calvary (Lincoln Calvary) which was formed here in Grand Rapids. William married MaryEllen Gibbs (daughter of Asa & Anna Gibbs) in 1861 in Ada. MaryEllen Gibbs is my gg aunt. Chapman's 1881 History of Kent County has a write up on both James and William Grant. I have the information at home and will send you another note from the house later this evening. I also found the passenger manifests, I'll send you the link once I look it up. I had been wondering if anyone knew about James & Isabella. Perhaps we can share more information. Anne ==== MORAY Mailing List ==== MORAY OPR's.
