    3. Kathy Wells wrote: > What does ScotlandsPeople mean? Hi Kathy, Ian Cameron is quite right, Scotland'sPeople is a fabulous site but you might like a tip or two. You pay [any currency] for at least 30 credits which also gives you 7 days free access. You can ask as many searches as you like but every time you access a page of hits you get one credit deducted. A page contains up to 25 hits so make sure you narrow or widen your search until you get close to a multiple of 25. Even if you know the date of an entry, spread the net cos you never know when the list of hits could be useful, e.g. for relatives you don't yet know about. And use wild cards judiciously to cover a wider range. Once you've found a hit that looks interesting, it will cost you 5 credits to have any post-1855 image downloaded to your computer; it comes into a different window. However the site doesn't seem to support Firefox for the images so you may have to use another browser for that [it's the only time I use Internet Explorer!!]. Take great care about the "Order an Image" button. For this they will charge you £10 per image. Admittedly it is printed on thick cream paper and authorised with the embossed Great Seal of the Registrar, but who really needs that formality 160+ years after the event? :-(( For pre-1855 images, look at the film if you can or get your Family History Society to look it up and print a copy for you. The Aberdeen society [ANESFHS] will do that for members at a fraction of the cost. One last thing, you can go back and look at any list you have already viewed and at any image you have downloaded. But if, like us, you have looked at nearly 600 lists of hits and viewed some 300 images, it isn't that easy to find your relevant old hit-lists - and you can't search the list [bother it!]. Hope this helps Good luck Ray www.whatsinaname.net

    3. LAURA, Looking at my information, I realized now my Murrays were in Blackfold of Mortlach. It was Robert Donaldson & wife Margaret Marquis that were in Edinvillie, and my Carmichaels were in Birkinbush and Blairshinnock of Aberlour. 3. Thanks Gavin. The area I am interested in is more or less a circle joining Cromdale, Castle Grant estate(Tomabain, Delriach, Lyngarie) with Grantown and Old Spey Bridge area in particular, Duthil (Easter Duthil and Gallovie), and back over across the Spey to east of Nethy Bridge (Corchullie and Sleamore), and back up to Cromdale. The timespan is 1790s onwards. 2. Harry Montgomery
    3. There was an attempt made to popularise the use of M' as a substitute for Mac and Mc.I have a copy of "The History of Fordyce Academy" published by the Banffshire Journal in 1936. In the list of pupils they have used M' extensively although not exclusively. The author of the book styles himself D.G.M'Lean. There is only one MacConnachie, a teacher from Hill of Chattie,Portsoy. My Granny's ancestors were McConnachie from Keith. Anything is possible in genealogical spelling. The kirk register of Fordyce has many of my ancestors shown as McGummery although on the gravestones their name is spelled Montgomery. The Ontario records are just as bad.My wife's Helson ancestors are recorded as Elson,Alson,Als and even Nelson. Most of the information was given orally and nothing was given back in written form.It is only in recent years that we have had to carry around bits of paper with our names on them.Good luck, Harry in Agincourt.

It was the first time I have run into this surname since subscribing to these lists and thought it did not sound very "Scottish" <grin>. Of course, being from America.............what do I know? Not knowing exactly whatt you mean by "this area" it is hard to be specific, but there were changes to the boundaries in both 1870 (under the "Inverness and Elgin County Boundaries Act" and again in 1891, as a result of the "Local Government (Scotland) Act. If you can be a bit more specific about which places you mean, I can be a bit more specific in my answer. Gavin Bell
