I was just wondering if you can tell me if there is any way to find out where to look for divorces late 1800's. As in my earlier message for Elizabeth Mackenzie - Penuels Daughter also, I said I have Penuel Smith marrying Alexander Mackenzie in 1877 and it was registered in 1878 (sheriff warrant) but she also registered for poor relief in 1877 and you wasnt sure about that. I have since found out Penuel left Scotland 1878 on board the ship "Rodell Bay" bound for Australia. Also Alexander Mackenzie was a Police Constable when he married her which I have also found out he was only in Police Force from 1876-1877 then he left it. There is no record of him coming to Australia and I havent been able to find him on the Australian Queensland Death register so I am wondering maybe Penuel and Alexander divorced. I did find a Alexander Mackenzie on the 1881 as a under gamekeeper in Elgin but I dont know if it is him or not. Could you please advise me where to look for any Divorces from 1877 - 1878. I hope I am not confusing you too much with their past. But Penuels has certainly been colourful. Somehow on the Libindx site Penuel is listed with New Zealand next to her name and I dont know where that fits in either. That was on Jane (Jemima) Douglas and Robert Branders listing. Any thoughts????? Julie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Forfarian Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.scotland.mor.general/2313.1.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I was in Elgin today and had a few minutes to spare so I looked up Jane Douglas or Brander in the Register of Poor for the Parish of Elgin. Jane Douglas or Brander, residing 166d High Street, Elgin, aged 33 years. Admitted 1908, March 3 at 3/- per week. Born Elgin, Protestant, married - separated. Occupation general servant. Wholly disabled by wound in right hand, wholly destitute. Settlement: birth and residence. No children living with her. Children not living with her: Elizabeth Jane Brander, born Elgin, 14½ years; Thomas James Brander, born Elgin, 13 years. Other Information see Record No 10/117. 1908, May 5 Ceased - struck off. A few explanatory notes in case you haven't seen a Parochial Board Register of Poor before. "Admitted" means that the Board had considered her application and accepted that it was their responsibility to deal with her. "Disabled" simply means "unable to earn a living". It does not imply a permanent physical or mental disability. "Settlement" is the criterion by which the Board decided whether an applicant was their responsibility or not. A person could acquire settlement in a parish either by being born there, or being the wife of a man born there, or by living there continuously for the prescribed number of years (five, I think it was). If an applicant had not acquired settlement, the Board would seek from the applicant's parish of settlement reimbursement for any emergency measures to relieve the immediate problem, and instructions as to how to deal with the applicant in future. So what I did was look-up in the Libindx under the letter E all of the cemeteries but this specific Robert is not shown. The one thing that Libindx tells me is that the Parish Register is MF A EL4 and that there were 4 entries for newspaper articles. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. William

I am unable to find it on scanning the Diary of Charles Bregazzi. HOWEVER - at the end of the Diary account, there is a note that 'Shipping records show that Carrier Dove, with 10 cabin and 330 intermediate and steerage passengers, completed her first voyage to Melbourne on 2 November 1857' Perhaps the list of steerage passengers is not available. Have just noticed this, so will check again with the PRO/Victoria. Judy. Perth. W.Australia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Although this census did not indicate relationships, and, despite the English instructions, sometimes women did use their legal birth surname for the census, the most likely scenario is that Isabella BROWN was illegitimate. You would need to check the Kirk Session records for the parish of her birth to find her father's name. Another source is the local Sheriff's Court if a financial claim was made against the father.
