    1. Re: [MORAY] No Christmas dinner this year??
    2. Anne Burgess
    3. > Where is Christmas dinner? I look forward to this topic every > year. You > must all be dining elsewhere or have solved all of your family > mysteries :-) No contest this year. It has to be my distant relative Joseph Duncan. He was born in 1821 in Birnie, and left the area when he grew up, losing touch with his family in the process. His siblings scattered; sister Elspet to found a dynasty in New Zealand, brother James to North America, and brother William to London, though three sisters married and remained in Moray, and brother Robert went to Ross-shire before retunring to Moray. William developed the habit of sending the London papers to his sisters, and in 1891 one sister was reading the big scandal of the time, when something struck her. The name of the man involved was Leslie Fraser Duncan. "My mother's maiden name was Fraser, and my grandmother's was Leslie", she mused. "I wonder??" So she wrote to William, and on reading her letter he leapt on to his horse, rode round to the man's fashionable London house and knocked on the door. A manservant answered. "Is your master at home?", enquired William. "No, sir". "Can you tell me where he is from?" "Yes, sir. He was born in a place called Birnie in the north of Scotland", replied the manservant. Lo and behold, this was indeed long-lost brother Joseph! He had made his way to London and for forty years had been the proprietor and editor of the 'Matrimonial News', a sort of Victorian dating agency for the upper crust, and had hit the headlines because he was successfully sued for breach of promise of marriage, at the age of 70, by a 21-year-old girl! The tale of the case, as recounted in the 'Times', rivals any modern soap opera, and involves much intrigue and dubious behaviour, bankruptcy, concealment of assets, hiding abroad, safe deposit boxes, people with assumed names, absent vicars, cheap hotel rooms and much else besides. Joseph, or Leslie Fraser, married four times, his last wife being the daughter of a lord. He married her in the middle of the court case, and by the time the girl was awarded £10,000 damages he had given all his assets to his wife, handed his business over to a stepson (his third wife's son), and was bankrupted. There was also some intriguingly dubious information about the girl and her family. He had no children by any of his wives, but the 'Times' hints at several illegitimate children. Ten years after this furore had died down, a Leslie Fraser Duncan was cited as co-respondent in a divorce case. As there is no other person of this name in any records up to that date, I have to conclude it is the same one. At the tender age of 80. So I would like to have Christmas dinner with Joseph Leslie Fraser Duncan, and to get him to tell me all about his life, no holds barred, which I am sure would be more than fascinating. Anne

I am also fairly sure, although it is still an assumption, that her mother was the daughter of a James Anderson and an Isobel Adamson, although on Jane Smith's 1861 census, Isobel is shown as her niece, rather than grand daughter. However, I have no clue yet as to who John Smith might be, or how I might be able to find out. I have contacted the Scotland Police Archives and was given the information below via email from the lady there on Alexander McKenzie: Email One "Thank you for your e-mail and apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I've searched the index of police personnel records and have found one Alexander MacKenzie who was born c.1857 in Langside, Aberdeen. He joined the Glasgow police force in 1876, age 19 (ref SR22/55/9 No.144)." Email Two "The record doesn't give details of parents or spouses names, but I have looked at the application and I'm not sure if it is the right one. The following information may mean more to you than me: Previous trade is described as 'Lunatic Attendant' Appointed constable 5 September 1876 Dismissed from the service 4 June 1877 He is described as single with no children He is resident at 30 John Knox St. The information below is on his Marriage certificate to Penuel Smith: Marriage Registration: Groom: Alexander MacKenzie, 21 yrs, bachelor, police constable Groom's Address: 61 Duke St, Glasgow Groom's Father: James Mackenzie, gamekeeper Groom's Mother: Jessie Mackenzie, m.s. You advised me in previous postings that Penuel Smith had in 1877 an Application for Poor relief to parish of Elgin - MF D EL4 (GRC archives - ZPEL A5/6 p148 no337b). I also have confirmed that the Penuel Smith that came to Australia in 1878 is in fact the same person who remarried in 1880 here in Australia. I tried to find a birth certificate in Scotspeople but there were so many Elizabeth Mackenzie's that after trying 4 I ran out of credit. So I will try again after Xmas to look for more. If the Alexander McKenzie in the 1881 Census listed as under gamekeeper is the same one then I can only assume they separated or something and Penuel left for Australia. I dont know where else to try to find any information out as I am a dead end here. On all things I have found so far none of the ages for Alexander are the same, it is like he changed it to suit things even though it only varies a couple of years. Any help would be great. 3. Hi Melvyn, Some how I must have hit send rather than save and my half finished email to you went whizzing around the world to the Moray site. What I had been about to say, when I went off to see if I could find the Cruickshanks in the 1861 and 1871 census records on Scotlands People ( no luck with either) was that Sarah seems to be living in the area south east of Inverness and then north to Nairn, given that she says she was born in Moy / Daviot , would she say she was of Limehillocks in Banffshire? I wondered if Limekills was supposed to be Limekilns? Would there be many limekilns in that area? In other words was it a common name for a house or dwelling associated with limekilns? However I see that Gavin Bell has just answered the above. Thank you very much Gavin. I have a Phillip's Navigator 3 miles to the inch map and can see Lochindorb Castle and Lochindorb Lodge. Can you tell me any more about Easter Crannich or Wester Limekilns? Or where I can go to look for more information please? Thank you also Melvyn for your contribution, every little bit helps. Thanks to everyone, including Anne, who I see has also now added some more very helpful information. Dorothy

    3. Melvyn, Thank you for replying to my query. I'm actually in Sydney, Australia, but the families I am researching NAIRN, McTAVISH, CRUICKSHANKS, DAVIDSON, BUTLER, BARCLAY, ROBERTSON all had some connection at one time to Dallas in Moray. Donald CRUICKSHANK according to his marriage record was of the Parish of Cromdale and Inverallan, and in 1834 gives his abode as Easter Crannich. However in the 1841 census he is living at Tomlea, Edinkillie and gives his birth place as outside the county (Moray), by 1851 his address is Loupmore, Ardlach, when he gives his birth place as Inverallan, Inverness shire. Sarah on the other hand also of the Parish of Cromdale and Inverallan gives her abode as Waster Limekills (hills?) and in 1841 is born outside the county (Moray). In 1851 she gives her birthplace as Daviot, Inverness shire and by 1881 she is living in Auldearn, Nairn and gives her birthplace as Moy, Inverness . Or > where I > can go to look for more information please? Dorothy, you need a much more detailed map than 3 miles to the inch. Someone has already pointed you towards the Geograph web site, where you can see both photographs of these places and the 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map showing where they are, and I think I also saw a reference in this thread to www.old-maps.co.uk where you can see the Ordnance Survey maps from the 1870s at six inches to the mile. It's a bit awkward to navigate on Old-maps, but from the home page click the maps tab and then select Map 2, then entering co-ordinates 300000,834600 will produce a map showing Crannich and 299600,836600 will show Limekilns. You can buy copies of the 1870s maps, and, as Gavin says, of the 1896 one-inch map. The best modern map for the purpose is the Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25,000 map. Easter and Wester Limekilns and Easter and Wester Crannich are all marked on the very edge (unfortunately) of Sheet No 419 Grantown-on-Spey. If you go to http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ you can see extracts from the 1:25,000 map. Put NH997359 in the search box to see Wester Limekilns, NH992368 for Easter Limekilns, NH999343 for Wester Crannich and NJ003346 for Easter Crannich. You can also use the map keys to navigate from one map square to the next if you prefer. There's an online map shop on the Ordnance Survey web site; you could think about using their 'OS Select' to get a map centred on Limekilns and Crannich. HTH Anne
